In 1899 a biography of John Joseph Brown was published in “Military History: A Library of Confederate States History in Twelve Volumes Written by Distinguished Men of the South and Edited by Gen. Clement A. Evans of Georgia”. According to this biography, “This gallant soldier is a native of Hardeman county Tenn born January 24 1840 the son of Henry W Brown and Mary Fowler his wife His father was a native of South Carolina and son of Edmund Brown of Wales who was a Revolutionary soldier under Gen Francis Marion Since the war Mr Brown has been engaged in farming in Fayette county until 1884 and since then near Buntyn Station Shelby county He enjoys membership in the Confederate Historical association and Company A Confederate veterans By his marriage in 1871 to Belle Abernathy who died in 1897 he has two daughters Irene Fowler a graduate of Vassar college and Anna Belle…”
John Joseph Brown’s military service was described as follows: “John J Brown of Shelby county first enlisted from Fayette county where his family then resided in an infantry company which was not accepted by the State the quota being full and in October 1861 he became a member of the light artillery battery of which JW Eldridge was captain EE Wright and TW Jones first lieutenants and JW Mebane and Joe Richardson second lieutenants at the organization At later dates the battery was known by the names of its successive captains Wright and Mebane In the fall and winter of 1862 it occupied an advanced position before Bowling Green until the army fell back to Nashville held the enemy's fleet in check until the Tennessee capital was evacuated and then was ordered to Corinth Arriving there Sergeant Brown was ordered to Decatur Ala with two guns where he remained on outpost duty until the evacuation of Corinth Rejoining the battery at Saltillo he took an active part in the Kentucky campaign but was not engaged at Perryville At Murfreesboro participating in Breckinridge's charge January 2 1863 the battery then under Captain Wright suffered the loss of the captain and a third of the men Going into Mississippi with Breckinridge's division the battery had a slight engagement at Jackson in July 1863 and returned to the army of Tennessee in September After this Brown and his comrades fought steadily at Chickamauga Missionary Ridge and through the Atlanta campaign at Rocky Face Ridge Resaca Lafayette Kenesaw Mountain where Captain Mebane was killed by a Parrott shell Pine Mountain Peachtree Creek Atlanta Jonesboro and Lovejoy's Station and subsequently in Hood's Tennessee campaign including Franklin and Nashville Their last fighting was in the heroic defense of Spanish Fort near Mobile against a vastly superior force From Mobile they went to Demopolis and from there to Meridian where the company was surrendered except ten men who broke the muskets with which they had been supplied on the loss of their cannon and started for Tennessee Reaching LaGrange Brown and some of his comrades surrendered in June 1865 Throughout this long service Mr Brown as a private and non commissioned officer missed but four roll calls
According to “The Buffaloe Trace: A History of the Descenants of William Buffaloe of Northampton County, North Carolina” (pages 8 and 13), three sons of Kisiah Brown Buffaloe served with John Joseph Brown. “William H. Buffaloe was born ca 1840…and remained in Hardeman County until 15 Nov 1861 when he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private at Jackson, TN. He joined Capt. Phillips’ Tenn. Light Artillery under Capt J. W. Merbane, was wounded at Chickamauga, and was discharged from Catoosa Hospital, Griffin, Ga., 30 Nov 1863. He was evidently killed during action in defense of Mobile, Ala., which fell on April 12, 1865. He was buried in Mobile on April 11, 1865 as a Corporal…John Washington Buffaloe was born 18 July 1844…He entered the Civil War as a private on April 2, 1862 in Capt. Phillips Light Artillery Co., the same company in which his brother had enlisted 24 May, 1861. He served under J. W. Ethridge, E. E. Wright and J. W. Mebane. John W. was wounded at Peach Tree Creek, five miles north of Atlanta, Ga., while guarding a bridge…He was listed as a patient at Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Ga in July of 1864 and was furloughed 26 July 1864…James Turner Buffaloe…was born about 1842 in Hardeman Co., TN…On May 24, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, Co. B of Capt. Phillips Tennessee Light Artillery as a private. He served in Co. D, 9th TN Infantry Regiment and later transferred to Eldridge Writes Battery just before the Battle of Murfreesboro…Toward the end of the war, he had been allowed to return home to Tennessee from near Mobile, Alabama, and was in Mississippi on his way back to the Army when Lee surrendered. He remained tether for a few days and then returned to Hardeman County, TN. He was not paroled and his father went to Mississippi to see his commander, Captain Phillips, and secured his discharge.”.3

Robert A. BROWN moved from Tennessee to Wood County, Texas, after 1870 According to Dave Smith on Ancestry, this story was re-told by his mother, K. Sue Smith, as related to her by Vada L. Brown around 1980. When Robert A. Brown and his siblings migrated to Texas by covered wagon, the families crossed the Red River together. Once they reached the other side they parted ways and headed different directions, waving to each other until they were out of sight.

Amy Halliburton, daughter of David Halliburton Jr. and Lucy Reynolds, was born in 1795 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina.
Amy married Rev. William Wilson in 1809 in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Reverend William Wilson was a traveling Methodist minister, described as having great zeal and purpose. Amy was described as a saintly woman, much given to prayer and good deeds. William Wilson and his family evidently remained in Humphreys Co., from the time of his marriage in 1809 to past 1820. In 1824 he was in Gibson co. By 1827 he moved to Henderson co., and was still there in 1830. By 1842 had moved to Lauderdale co. where he must have remained until his death. After Williams death in 1845 Amy lived in Haywood Co.from at least 1848 through 1860, and is said to have died in Lauderdale co., where she was buried in 1865.1
