Paul began military service on 21 December 1863 in Carmi, White County, Illinois, when he enlisted as a private in company E 13th Illinois Cavalry Consolidated. He was mustered into service 20 Jan 1864 at Camp Butler, Illinois. He deserted 27 Aug 1864 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was 40 years old and described as 5' 6" with black hair and blue eyes with a dark complexion.
Dr. Paul Collins ABNEY died on 5 September 1896 in Gallatin County, Illinois.2 He was buried in South America Cemetery, Saline County, Illinois.2
