Newton McDaniel WOODRUFF1

M, b. 2 December 1816, d. 1846
Newton McDaniel WOODRUFF was born on 2 December 1816 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, the son of Nathaniel Woodruff and Mary McDaniel. He was the grandson of Thomas and Eunice Woodruff.2

Newton reached the legal age of 21 days after his father died. As soon as he reached legal age for guardianship he sold his families home place along with 38 acres that went with the place, and settled all other business interests his father had, including a cotton gin business. His sisters were forced to vacant and move elsewhere. Newton then married his childhood sweetheart, Frances Abney.3

Newton married Frances Maria ABNEY, daughter of Thomas Hamilton ABNEY and Mary Ann Holmes, on 18 December 1837 in Bibb (now Chilton) County, Alabama.4,5

It appears that Newton went into business with his brother-in-law, Horace Ware. Horace, came with his parents from Lynn, Massachuetts, to Bibb county where they went into the iron business. He married Newton's younger sister, Martha Ann Woodruff, in 1841. About that time he began buying brown hematite ore beds and timber lands in Shelby county and began construction of cold-blast iron furnace at a site six miles south of Columbiana. The Shelby Iron Works produced ingots in various shapes, including slabs, bars, or finished products such as rails, beams or plates. It became one of the most important ironworks in the Confederacy before being destroyed by Wilson's Raiders. It was rebuilt following the war. Newton invested heavily in the early stages of this project before he was killed in a mining accident in 1846.3

In 1846 Newton died in Shelby County, Alabama, at age 30 leaving Frances a widow.6 He was buried in Community Baptist Cemetery, Brierfield, Bibb County, Alabama.1,7

Relationship
3rd cousin 4 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Jane ABNEY, daughter of Pvt. William ABNEY and Amelia "Milly" GRAVES, was born circa 1797 in Kentucky.1

Jane Abner (sometimes seen as Abney) married Henry Winkler II in Estill County, Kentucky on February 7, 1813. They settled in Randolph County, Missouri. Henry died there in 1846-1847. Jane was alive in the 1870 census of Randolph County, Missouri, living with her son, John, a widow, and his family. Jane's daughter, Margaret Winkler, was also in the home. In the 1880 census of Macon County, Missouri, Jane was living with her son, Lewis, a widow, and his family. It is not known when Jane Winkler died or where she is buried, but a likely location is Enon Cemetery in Macon County, Missouri. Several of Lewis Winkler's family members are buried there, and it is believed that he, too, is buried at Enon. Another possible location for Jane Winkler's burial is Hickory Grove Cemetery in Monroe County, Missouri, where it is believed her husband, Henry, may be buried as is her son, John, and other Winkler relatives. The Winkler’s lived in eastern Randolph County not far from Hickory Grove Cemetery in western Monroe County.1

Jane married Henry Winkler II on 7 February 1813 in Estill County, Kentucky. Henry was the son of Henry and Susannah Ross Winkler. Henry and Jane settled in Randolph County, Missouri. He died there before January 5, 1847. His place of burial is unknown. (A likely location is Hickory Grove Cemetery just a mile or two across the line in Monroe County, Missouri. His son, John, and several Winkler relatives are buried there. According to one cemetery official, there is no record of any Winkler's buried there. But a death notice for John in 1901 shows Hickory Grove as the burial place. There seems to be an old section of the cemetery. It is likely the Winkler's are buried there.)1

Jane ABNEY died after 1880 in Missouri.
