He mustered out 28 Nov 1864. Elijah re-enlisted two days later in the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry (Union). He mustered out 17 Aug 1865 in Macon, Georgia due to a hernia that occurred in the line of duty. His fellow solders suggested that it was caused by long hours of hard riding.

He had joined the 4th following the Battle of Columbia, Tennessee. They fought in the Battle of Franklin November 30. Battle of Nashville December 15–16. Lynnville and Richland Creek December 24–25. Pulaski December 25–26. Expedition into Mississippi January 15–21, 1865. Wilson's Raid to Macon, Ga., March 22-May 1. Trion, Ala., April 1. Northport, near Tuscaloosa, April 3. Occupation of Tuscaloosa April 4. Occupation of Talladega April 22. Munford's Station April 23. Rejoined Wilson at Macon May 1. Duty at Macon and in Georgia until August.

He was killed in action 7 Aug 1864 during the Battle of Utoy Creek near Atlanta.¹

Elbert began military service at age 21 on 5 October 1861 in Camp Sherman, Kentucky. He was described as 5' 11" with light complexion, dark hair and eyes. On 14 Dec 1861 he mustered in as a private in Company F, 15th Kentucky Infantry (Union). He was killed in action 8 Oct 1862 during the Battle of Perryville, aka the Battle of Chaplin Hills, Kentucky.^2,3

Pvt. Elbert Preston ABNEY died on 8 October 1862 at Battle of Perryville in Kentucky at age 22.³ He was buried in Magnolia Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Magnolia, LaRue County, Kentucky.

     Cpl. Aaron Fry ABNEY, son of Robert Milton ABNEY and Catherine Powell Smith, was born on 26 June 1844 in LaRue County, Kentucky.¹

Aaron began military service at age 17 on 27 September 1861 in Camp Sherman, Kentucky, when he enlisted as a corporal in Company F, 15th Kentucky Infanty (Union). He was described as 5' 10" being of light complexion with dark hair and blue eyes. He and his brother, Elbert, were killed in action at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky.²
