He was stationed in Columbia when Sherman destroyed it. He was always keenly interested in the Confederacy and in 1925 was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel and Chaplain General in the South Carolina division of the United Confederate Veterans.

Rev. James Clark ABNEY was licensed as a minister in the Methodist Church in September 1881. While never a member of the conference he was active in several charges and was ordained an elder in 1904. He was best known in Columbia as the chaplain in the South Carolina Penitentiary, in which capacity he served for more than 20 years and then at the state hospital where he served for nine years when ill health forced him to resign in September 1927.
