Rev. James Clark ABNEY appeared on a census, enumerated 19 December 1850, in the household of his parents Jacob Pope ABNEY and Eliza A. Martin in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was emumerated as James C. Abney, age 5.

Rev. James Clark ABNEY appeared on a census, enumerated 23 August 1860, in the household of his parents Jacob Pope ABNEY and Eliza A. Martin in Saluda, Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina. He was enumerated as James C. Abney, 15.

During the Civil War, Rev. James Clark ABNEY enlisted in Company D, 19th South Carolina Infantry in 1864 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina. He was stationed in Columbia when Sherman destroyed it. He was always keenly interested in the Confederacy and in 1925 was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel and Chaplain General in the South Carolina division of the United Confederate Veterans.

Rev. James Clark ABNEY appeared on a census, enumerated 11 August 1870, in the household of his parents Jacob Pope ABNEY and Eliza A. Martin in Saluda, Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was enumerated as James Abney, 30, farm labor.

Rev. James Clark ABNEY was licensed as a minister in the Methodist Church in September 1881. While never a member of the conference he was active in several charges and was ordained an elder in 1904. He was best known in Columbia as the chaplain in the South Carolina Penitentiary, in which capacity he served for more than 20 years and then at the state hospital where he served for nine years when ill health forced him to resign in September 1927.

Rev. James Clark ABNEY died on 3 January 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina, at age 84. He was buried in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Swansea, Lexington County, South Carolina.
