Dr. John Bolger1

M, b. 10 November 1768, d. 1835
Dr. John Bolger was born on 10 November 1768 in Virginia.2

John married Elizabeth ABNEY, daughter of Nathaniel ABNEY and Isabella MADISON, in October 1795 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. They had five children: John 1798, Elizabeth 1802, Sarah 1805, Henry 1819, and Anna 1810.3,2

From John Chapman's History of Edgefield: "The epithet of "Mad Bill" was applied to him on account of the grumness of his countenance, and not on account of any harshness, nor violence, nor irritability of temper. This William Abney was a son of Azariah Abney and grandson of Captain Nathaniel Abney and Isabella Madison, who came from Virginia about the year 1761. I never saw Mad Bill, nor his brother Hardy. I was at their father's house at the funeral of their sister, Miss Elizabeth Abney, but I do not remember seeing them there. The funeral sermon was preached by Dr. John Bolger, a great Baptist preacher at that time, living on Turkey or Mountain Creek, or somewhere in that region of country. Dr. Bolger was a connection of the family, he having married a widow Martha Wills, a sister of Azariah Abney, and who was also my own great-grandmother. Dr. Bolger was English by birth, and came to this country in his youth or boyhood. He raised a family here in Edgefield, but after his death they all moved away and, I think, Dr. Bolger has no descendants now living in Edgefield. Newberry's much respected citizen.

Dr. John Bolger sold a tract of land to William Coleman on 12 May 1798 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. William Coleman of Edgefield pays John Bolger fifty pounds sterling for a 200-acre tract "late the property of Matthew Wills Deceased, being part laid off to his widow as part of her dower who is now the wife of the above mentioned John Bolger. The two hundred acres of land hereby conveyed situate in the county of Edgefield in the District of NInety-Six and state aforesaid upon Berrys Creek a branch of the Great Saluda" . . . [Description of land given. It abuts Richard Coleman's land.] . . . Fifty-five chains to the Bginning all three of the last lands and part of the first bound by land belonging to the children of Matthew Wills deceased." Witnesses: Richard Coleman, James Carson, and Isabella Abney. Proved by Richard Coleman on the same day before Nathaniel Abney, JP; Recorded March 12, 1799 [Note: He might have been a brother of Richard Coleman, son of John Coleman and Mary Wills].4

He bought land from Wright Nicholson on 29 October 1800 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. John Bolger paid Wright Nicholson $460 for a tract of land containing 300 acrew which is part of two different tracts of land. One tract containing 250 acres of land was formerly granted to John Abney on June 5, 1786 and conveyed to Thomas Pulley and by him to Wright Nicholson. It abuts land of John Abney's conveyance to Thomas Pulley. The other fifty acres are the "whole of a tract of land originally granted to John Rushton and sold by William Deen" to Nicholson. The whole 300 acre tract conveyed to John Bolger is bounded by lands of Thomas Scott and Richard Dozier. Witnesses: Amos Richardson, John Abney, Frances X [mark] Richardson. Proved January 3, 1801 before Nathaniel Abney, JP, by John Abney; Recorded January 12, 1801.5

He bought a tract of land from John ABNEY on 1 March 1805 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. For $200 he sold 200 acres being part of 640 acres originally granted to said John Abney on Tossestys Creek a branch of Great Saluda River, said tract containing 200 acres bounded on northeast by William Kennedy, Paul Abney and James Barnes, on southeast by James Summers, south by Crook Fork Branch of Tossestys Creek and said Bolger's plantation, northeast to wagon road from Saluda Old Town towards Charleston, up said road to a cross road leading to Paul Abneys, the bounds of William Kennedy's land on said Charleston road, along said cross road to where William Kennedy now lives, originally to Alexander Kennedy, dec'd. Witnesses: Austin Eskridge, Thomas Goodman. Signed John Abney and proven 2 Mar 1805 by Thomas Goodman. Nath'l Abney, JP. Recorded 5 Nov 1805.6,7

Dr. John Bolger, John ABNEY, Austin Pollard Eskridge, Dr. William L. Fluker, Azariah ABNEY and Joel P. ABNEY were listed as heirs receiving payments from the estate of Nathaniel ABNEY 3 March 1807 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He received payment on beheath of his wife, Elizabeth Abney, dec'd.8

Dr. John Bolger, John ABNEY, Azariah ABNEY, Austin Pollard Eskridge, Joel P. ABNEY, Sarah (ABNEY) Carson and Thomas Atkinson were listed as heirs receiving payments from the estate of Nathaniel ABNEY 19 January 1810 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He received a share as husband of Elizabeth Abney, dec'd.8

Dr. John Bolger appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, John Bulger - 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, and 4 slaves.

Dr. John Bolger and Sarah (ABNEY) Carson bought a tract of land from John ABNEY on 22 June 1812 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina. For $40 he deeded 250 acres, being part of 3500 acres originally granted to said John Abney on 5 Dec 1788 in Ninety-Six District , now Edgefield County. It was on the Great and Little Saluda Rivers and was adjacent to lands surveyed for Michael Abney, now claimed by Col. Samuel Mays. Witnesses: Joel Abney, Austin Eskridge, Lark Abney. It was proven 25 Jun 1812 by Lark Abney before William Spragins and recorded 22 May 1816.9,10

Dr. John Bolger sold a tract of land to Sarah (ABNEY) Carson on 21 April 1817 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. "Whereas John Abney Esq. and late of the District of Edgefield, deceased, did by a deed bearing date the 22nd day of June" 1812 "conveyed to John Bolger and Sarah Carson a tract of land of land on the waters of Big creek containing 25_ acres which said tract of land has since been resurveyed by Thomas Anderson D.S. and the within plat of one hundred and fifty three acres laid off by line as Sarah Carsons part of said land while said division I do hereb acknowledge myself to be satisfied with and do hereby bind myself and my heirs" . . . John Bolger relinquishes all claim and title to the 153 "acres of land by said deed from said Abney, dec'd." Witnesses: Joseph Taylor, Nancy Carson, and James Carson. (Plat is included). Note: Thomas Anderson, DS, attested that at the request of John Bolger he had resurveyed the land "on Big Creek conveyed by John Abney Esq. dec'd to John Bolger and Sarah Carson by deed bearing date the 22 day of June 1812" . . . He says he has resurveyed he land and found it to contain 153 acres and has laid out Sarah Carsons part on September 23, 1814. Recorded February 6, 1818. Note: Sarah Abney Carson sold the 153 acres to her son James Carson on May 19, 1817.11

He sold a tract of land to Joseph Taylor on 19 May 1817 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Joseph Taylor pays John Bolger $300 for a tract of land containing 146 acres which were part of a tract of land granted to John Abney, dec'd, and bounding land of William Abney and John Taylor and being on Panther Branch of Saluda River. Witnesses: James Carson, Nancy Carson, and Elizabeth X [mark] Walton. Proved before James Bell, JP, by James Carson on February 5, 1818; Recorded February 6, 1818. (Note: This was likely James Carson, Jr., the son of James Carson and Sarah Abney Carson.)12

He sold land to Lark ABNEY on 3 December 1817 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Lark Abney for $560.39 paid him by John Bolger relinquishes "right and title" to a tract of land conveyed to him by Henry Parkman on the east side of Big and Little mountain creeks anc containing about 113 acres and registered in the Clerks office at Edgefield April 15, 1817 in Book LL, pp. 72-73. Witnesses: Joseph Reardon and Nancy Reardon. Note: Nancy Reardon is the daughter of John and Susan Isabella Pope Abney and married to Joseph Reardon.13
