Mary Permelia WEAVER

F, b. 6 May 1823, d. after 1900
Relationship
2nd great-grandaunt of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Mary Permelia WEAVER, daughter of Jesse WEAVER and Rebecca SANFORD, was born on 6 May 1823 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.1,2 Mary Permelia WEAVER also went by the name of Mealey.

Mary married Green Berry Sanford on 14 June 1837 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.3

She was probably the female age 16 to 20 listed in the household of her husband, Green Berry Sanford, in the 1840 Federal Census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, She would have been 17 years old.4

Mary Permelia WEAVER and Green Berry Sanford moved from Alabama to Shelby County, Texas, before 1850. In 1850 they were living in Shelby County along with other Sanfords. They had no children at that time. Then in 1860, they turn up in Orange County, Texas with a 14-year-old Thomas and 9-year-old Catherine. Family lore among Catherine's descendants is that she was an adopted, half-Indian child. That is probably true because Catherine grew up and married Permelia's younger brother, George. In 1900 Permelia was living with George Weaver in Angelina County as his widowed sister.5

Mary Permelia WEAVER and Green Berry Sanford appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 3 September 1850 in Shelby County, Texas. The household was listed as G. B. Sanford, age 36, $150 real estate, born Georgia and Permelia Sanford, age 25, born Alabama. There had been one son in 1840, perhaps he had died or perhaps any children stayed with relatives when they moved to Texas.6

Mary Permelia WEAVER and Green Berry Sanford adopted Mary Catherine SANFORD circa 1852 in Texas.

Mary Permelia WEAVER and Green Berry Sanford appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 13 June 1860 in Orange, Orange County, Texas. The household was listed as G. B. Sanford, a 46 year old shoemaker, born Georgia and his 36 year old wife, Permelia Sanford, keeping house, born Alabama. He had real estate valued $300 and personal estate $200. Also in the household were Thomas Sanford, 14 (1846), attending school, born Georgia and Catherine Sanford, 9 (1851), born Texas. There were no children in 1850 and Thomas would have been four years old. Had he remained with relatives at the time of the move to Texas or was he a nephew. He was bonr in Georgia and there is no record of Greenberry and Catherine in Georgia. Catherine is said to have been a half-Indian girl adopted by the Sanfords, but she could also be a daughter.7

Green died in May 1870 in Orange County, Texas, leaving Mary Permelia Sanford as a widow.

Mary Permelia WEAVER appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 29 July 1870 in Orange, Orange County, Texas. The household was listed as P. Sanford, a 45 year old female, born Alabama, keeping house; Catherine Sanford, 19, keeeping house, born Texas; Martha Sanford, 17, sewing, born Texas; Ella Sandord, 14, at home, born Texas; and Amey Sanford, 11, at home, born Texas. The last three had not appeared in the household in 1860. Were they perhaps some of Green's nieces?8

Mary Permelia WEAVER was mentioned in a 23 July 1892 letter from J. B. Forester of Bessemer to "Geo. and Dela Wats": "Dear Children, I got your letter and was glad to hear you all was well and sorry to hear that Mealy [Permelia Weaver] was ded. this leaves us all well. times is so dull that ther is nothing a going on. it has rain so much it have ruin prety well everything. Mary Permelia WEAVER appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1900, in the household of her brother George J. H. T. WEAVER in Precinct 6, Angelina County, Texas. She was recorded as sister Permelia Sanford, 77, born May 1823 in Alabama. She was a widow and mother of two children.10
