Clorian West1

F, b. 22 November 1831, d. 10 May 1910
Clorian West was born on 22 November 1831 in South Carolina. She was also known as Chloe Ann.

Clorian married Wilson ABNEY, son of Zachariah ABNEY and Tabitha TOWNSEND, on 29 December 1850 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. From the Edgefield Advertiser, 6 Feb 1851: Married on the 29th ult. by Rev. T. D. Puryfoy, Mr. Wilson Abney to Miss Clorian West, daughter of Arthur West, all of this district.1,2

Chloe Ann West and Wilson ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 15 August 1860 in Saluda, Edgefield County, South Carolina. The household was listed as Wilson Abney, a 35 year old farmer; his inferred wife Chloe Abney, 29; and Richard Coleman, 16. All were born in South Carolina. Wilson had real estate valued $5,000 and personal estate valued $14,415. They lived next door to Tabitha Abney.

Wilson died on 26 September 1868 near Bauknight's Ferry on the Saluda River, Edgefield County, South Carolina, at age 44 as a result of a feud leaving Clorian West as a widow. Chloe Ann remarried twice, in 1870 to Rev. Robert M. Harrison and about 1874 to Joel Inabinet.3,4

She appeared in a newspaper article 3 November 1869 in the Edgefield Advertiser, published in Edgefield, South Carolina. The paper advertised a bill for Petition by Robert J. Smith, et ux vs. Chloe Ann Abney. Cary M. Abney, Olin L. Abney, and John G. D. Abney are named as out of state defendants and ordered to appear, plead, answer, or demur or have judgment rendered against them.5

Clorian married Rev. Robert M. Harrison on 28 April 1870 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. On April 28th 1870, at the bride's residence by Rev. J. H. C. McKinney, Rev. R. M. Harrison, of the S. C. Conference, to Mrs. C. A. Abney, of Edgefield co., S. C.6

Clorian West and Rev. Robert M. Harrison appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 18 August 1870 in Saluda Old Town, Edgefield County, South Carolina. The household was listed as Robert Harrison, a 40 year old Minister of the Gospel, born Georgia; his implied wife Chloe Harrison, age 38, born South Carolina; and Elmina Rush, age 66, house keeper, born South Carolina. Rev. Harrison had real estate valued $2800 and personal estate $600. It said that Robert and Chloe had married in April 1870. Note: Elmina Rush was the daughter of Joel P. Abney and Elizabeth Pope who lived near Higgins Ferry. She was the widow of Rev. Rush a Methodist minister.7

Clorian West and Rev. Robert M. Harrison appeared in a newspaper article 9 February 1871 in the The Intelligencer, published in Anderson, South Carolina.
Brutal Murder-- The Newberry Herald of Wednesday last contains the following account of the murder of Rev. Robert M. Harrison, who was well known to many of our readers, and held in high esteem by all of his friends and acquaintances. Mr. Harrison married the widow of Wilson Abney, of Edgefield, who was killed in a private melee two or three years ago: A shocking murder was committed on Friday night last, in Edgefield District, about four miles from Bouknight's Ferry. The victim was Rev. R. M. Harrison, and the deed was committed just after private prayers, as he was in the act of retiring. No clue has been found of the murderer, and the only knowledge is that Mr. H. was shot through the window, half of the blind of which was open, and with a double-barreled shotgun, in the face and side, with mixed loads of buck and smaller shot, and that either shot would have been fatal. Death was instantaneous. This is a most horrible and foul murder, rendered doubly so that the victim was a minister and an inoffensive and quiet gentleman, and most melancholy as his wife is again a widow through violence, her former husband having been shot in a difficulty some years ago. Mr. Harrison was formerly connected with the South Carolina conference, and subsequently a local preacher within the bounds of the Little Saluda Circuit.

Clorian West and Rev. Robert M. Harrison appeared in a newspaper article 11 February 1871 in the The Charleston Daily News, published in Charleston, South Carolina. It provides further details of the murder:
A Horrible Murder-- A correspondent with the Edgefield Advertiser says:

Our community was shocked to learn on the morning of the 28th instant that during the preceding night the Rev. Robert M. Harrison was assassinated in his bed chamber as he was undressing to retire. Mr. Harrison's bed stood near a low window, which opened on the plaza. One blind being thrown open and the curtain being looped back, enabled the perpetrator of the foul deed to fire two shots with fatal accuracy through the closed window, blackening the sash and scattering the fragments of glass over the room. Both shots took effect upon Mr. Harrison in the head and the other in the side. The weapon used is supposed to have been a double-barrel, loaded with slugs or buckshot. Mrs. Harrison, a highly sensitive woman, was sitting by the fire, reading a paper, in the same room, narrowly escaped being injured by scattered shot and fragments of glass. The coroner's jury was unable to find any trace or clue that would lead to the discovery of the murderer. Mr. Harrison was an almost stranger in our neighborhood, having but recently settled among us. No one knew of his having an enemy. About Christmas he had some difficulty in settling with the freedmen on his place.

Clorian married Joel Inabinet circa 1874 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.8

Clorian West died on 10 May 1910 in Saluda County, South Carolina, at age 78.9,10 She was buried in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, Salluda, Saluda County, South Carolina.

Her obituary appeared 13 May 1910 in the The Newberry Weekly Herald, published in Newberry, South Carolina.
