Hudson Bayard ARNOLD1

     Hudson Bayard ARNOLD, son of Andrew Lee ARNOLD and Nancy Agnes Hopper, was born on 16 November 1886 in Bibb County, Alabama.1

Hudson Bayard ARNOLD appeared on a census, enumerated 25 June 1900, in the household of his parents Andrew Lee ARNOLD and Mary Eldorado Sewell in McGraws, Bibb County, Alabama. He was recorded as Hudson Arnold, age 13, born Nov. 1886, at school.2

Hudson began military service at age 20 on 17 September 1907 in Fort Logan, Denver, Colorado, when he enlisted in the U. S. Army. His enlistment shows pace of birth as Birmingham, Alabama and that he was a 21 year old laborer. He was discribed as having green eyes, dark brown hair, dark complexion and 5 ft. 6 1/4 inch tall.

In the 1910 Census he was still a private in the Army was living in Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Oahu Island, Hawaii.3

Hudson married Velma M. Stone circa 1912. She was the daughter of William Jasper Stone and Mary Ellen Colwell.4

With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Hudson filled out a draft card on 12 September 1918 in Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama. Hudson Bay Arnold was 32 years old, born 16 Nov 1885[?] and living in Blocton. He was a coal miner employed by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company. He was married and described as having brown eyes and dark hair, medium height and build.

Hudson Bayard ARNOLD died on 2 October 1971 in West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama, at age 84.1 He was buried in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama.1

His obituary appeared 4 October 1971 in the The Tuscaloosa News, published in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. CENTREVILLE - Funeral services for Hudson Bayard Arnold, 84, of West Blocton, were to be conducted today (October 4, 1971) at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in West Blocton.

Officiating ministers were to be the Rev. P. F. McGuire and the Rev. J. D. Mosley. Burial was to take place in Enon Cemetery with Jack Lee Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Mr. Arnold who died Saturday (October 2, 1971) at the South Highlands Hospital in Birmingham, is survived by one son, Arthur Howard Arnold of West Blockton; two daughters, Mrs. Otis Romager of Pana, Ill., and Mrs. Virgil C. Workman of Pensacola, Fla; four sisters, Mrs. Albert Cawthorn of Gardendale, Mrs. Essie Burchfield of Alliance, Ohio, Mrs. Mary Lee Sims and Miss Louise Arnold, both of Birmingham; one brother, R. W. Arnold of Birmingham; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

On 14 August 1973 Arthur Howard died in Bibb County, Alabama, at age 56 leaving Mary Ann a widow.1 He was buried in Schultz Creek Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama.1

Malinda married first Rev. John L. Adams on 26 July 1851 in Perry County, Alabama.

Malinda Jane Sanderson and Rev. John L. Adams appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 18 July 1860 in West side of Cahaba River, Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama. The household was listed as J. L. Adams, 27, Baptist minister, born Tennessee; Malinda Adams, 28, Tennessee; and Joseph P. Adams, 9, Alabama.

John died circa 19 September 1863 in Battle of Chickamauga leaving Malinda Jane Sanderson as a widow.

Malinda married Jesse Anderson BROWN Jr., son of Jesse Anderson BROWN and Obedience LEGGETT, on 14 January 1868 in Bibb County, Alabama. She was the widow of Rev. John L. Adams who had died in the war. She was the daughter of Richard C. and Sarah S. Sanderson of Perry County.1

They were sons of Jane's from her first marriage. Jesse's son "Henry" [Holly] Brown was living next door.2

Jesse died before 1880 in Bibb County, Alabama, leaving Malinda Jane as a widow. She would have been about 45.

Malinda Jane Sanderson appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 15 June 1880 in Beat 4, Montevallo, Shelby County, Alabama. The household was listed as Malinda J. He fought at 2nd Manassas, 30 Aug 1862; Suffolk, 17 Sep 1862; Sharpsburg, 3 May 1863; Gettysburg, 2 Jul 1863; and Chickamauga, 19 Sep 1863, where he was reported missing and probably dead.

Circa 19 September 1863 John L. died at Battle of Chickamauga leaving Malinda Jane a widow.

His obituary appeared 28 May 1952 in the The Birmingham News, published in Birmingham, Alabama. Jesse William "Bill" Brown of 1731 McCaskill St. in Tarrant died at his home yesterday. It said that he was a former resident of Arjay, Kentucky. He was a retired miner and a member of the Tarrant First Baptist Church. He was survived by a widow, Minnie Brown, and five daughters: Mrs. H. H. Hawton, Tarrant; Mrs. C. J. White, Frisco; Mrs. S. L. Thomas, Huffman; Mrs. Charles A. Burns, New Haven, MS; and Mrs. George Jones, Fultondale. There were also three sons: J. P. and Robert of Tarrant, and K. C. Brown of Arjay, KY. He had 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
