She had only mashed sweet potatoes to feed the baby and she washed clothes every night.
An old Baptist preacher about 70 years old who had come to escort them, the oldest boy who was 10 (Elisha), and one black man sent by their father, got the children safely to their relatives."4

Based on this change he revoked the item bequeathing a section of land that he had left jointly to his wife and to daughter Ivy, changing it to now go only to "my beloved wife Erie Cottingham." He also added to what he had initially given to his "beloved granddaughters Kathleen and Margaret Cottingham" (daughters of Charlie) granting them another 10 acres near the Ashby road. He added a bequeath of some land to his "beloved daughter Mrs. R. E. (Florence) Lindsay" being the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 33, township 23, range 11 east. Nancy married Moses Lambert COTTINGHAM, son of Elisha COTTINGHAM II and Nancy PARKER, on 6 December 1849 in Bibb County, Alabama.
Nancy Catherine WOODS and Moses Lambert COTTINGHAM appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 4 November 1850 in West side of Cahaba River, Bibb County, Alabama. The household was listed as Moses Cottingham, a 22-year-old farmer and his 18-year-old wife, Catherine. They lived next door to Jeremiah and Charlotte Brown Tate and Asa A. and Mary Brown.1

"However, his children had to be sent to their grandparents in Alabama, and since the railroad tracks had been torn up trying to keep the Yankees from getting to Vicksburg, they could not go by train.
Cirrenia (Rena) Abagail being the oldest, took care of the younger ones, including a 9-month old brother (John David) and 2-year old sister (Henrietta) during the three weeks it took to make the trip by ox wagon. She had only mashed sweet potatoes to feed the baby and she washed clothes every night.
An old Baptist preacher about 70 years old who had come to escort them, the oldest boy who was 10 (Elisha), and one black man sent by their father, got the children safely to their relatives."3
