Hezekiah Gentry Sr.

M, b. 1744, d. April 1824
Hezekiah Gentry Sr. was born in 1744 in Hanover County, Virginia.

Hezekiah married Catherine Reynolds circa 1753.

Hezekiah Gentry Sr. appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, Hezh. Jentry - 4 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 3 females, and 6 slaves.

Hezekiah left a will dated 19 January 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He makes bequests to:

1. "my son Runnels Gentry" and says that Runnels is to pay the children of Laureny Burnett $400.

2. "my daughter Anna Teer"

3. "my daughter Gilly Abney"

4. "my son Robert Gentry"

5. "my daughter Delilah Taiket"

6. "my daughter-in-law, Sarah Gentry" - widow of son Thomas Gentry

7. "my daughter Elizabeth Nichols"

8. "my grandchildren being the heirs of my daughter Mourning Carlton"

9. "my grandson Runnels Gentry, son of Hezekiah Gentry"

He then talks about property divisions and property sale after paying debts, etc. "to be equally divided among my five children" - 1. Runnels Gentry, 2. Anna Teer, 3. Gilly Abney, 4. Robert Gentry, and Sarah Gentry, widow of son Thomas Gentry.

Hezekiah, Sr. (d. 1824) names both son Runnels Gentry and son Robert Gentry as executors.1

Hezekiah Gentry Sr. died in April 1824 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. His will was recorded 17 Apr 1824.

Hezekiah, Sr. (d. 1824) did not update his will between the time he wrote it in January 1820 and the time he died in April 1824. His son Robert had died in October 1820, so Runnels became the sole executor. Hezekiah has mentioned daughter Elizabeth Nichols as an heir, but she is NOT mentioned in dividing the residue of the estate. Perhaps her husband was well off enough not to be included. Maybe the same goes for daughter Delilah Tackett. The only other child of his not mentioned is his son Hezekiah (who also died in 1824) other than to say that Runnels Gentry is Hezekiah, Sr.'s grandson and that grandson Runnels is Hezakiah, Jr.'s son.

May 10, 1824: Hezekiah's estate sale was held May 10, 1824. Some of the buyers were: Sarah Gentry, Reason Gentry, Joseph Trotter, Sr., Hezekiah Burnett, Hugh Duffy, Susannah Abney (later Christie, I think), Charles Abney, Gilly Gentry, Hugh Duffy, Levi Gentry. There were notes for Walter Abney, Samuel Abney. There were others too

October 11, 1824: Bill of Sale for goods and chattels of Hezekiah Gentry: Buyers were William Turner, Hugh Duffy, Daniel Vines, Cadaway Clark, Sampson Duffy, Axon Lewis, Joseph Griffith, Ausburn Vines, Reason Gentry, James B. Griffith, Edward Clark. The whole sale amounted to $115,36.

December 2, 1824: Sale bill for the estate of Hezekiah Gentry: Buyers include: Hugh Duffy, Sampson Duffy, James Abney, William Abney, Levi Gentry, Hezekiah Gentry, Susannah Christie, Henry Emfinger, Simeon Christie, R. Gentry, William Gentry, and others.

Note: The October sale and the December sale are in the Runnels Gentry folder. On September 14, 1826, Runnels Gentry's estate paid Sampson Duffy for making TWO coffins. One is obviously for Runnels, but he himself did not need two. That is a total of three coffins.

1824-1825: The estate of Hezekiah Gentry, Runnells Gentry, Exr.: Dec. 2, 1824 - Rec'd $200 from Samuel Abney, Sr; January 6, 1825 - Rec'd $200 from Anna Teer. Others who paid into the estate included Levy Gentry, Henry Emfinger, Joseph Trotter, George Emfingers, and others. Those who the estate paid included Anna Teer ($200 on a note), Sampson Duffy for making a coffin (June 20, 1825), Jeremiah Burnett ($200 for children)

1826-1827: The estate of Hezekiah Gentry, Hugh Duffy, Adm.: Samuel Abney, Sr. and Anna Teer each paid $200 into the estate of Hezekiah Gentry. That was per the will of Hezekiah Gentry (d. 1824). It looks like Sarah Gentry, widow of Thomas Gentry paid back $220 in 1827. These last payments had Hugh Duffy administering Hezekiah's estate. I guess that is because Runnels had died. Duffy's accounting began on February 20, 1826 and went through January 6, 1827. Reason Gentry was one of the others who paid into the estate.2

M, b. circa 1758, d. October 1820
Robert Gentry, son of Hezekiah Gentry Sr. and Catherine Reynolds, was born circa 1758 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Robert married Amelia Fleming circa 1776.

Robert Gentry appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, 1 male over 16 (Robert), 3 males under 16, and 2 females. No slaves.

Robert Gentry was named executor and an heir in the will of Hezekiah Gentry Sr. dated 19 January 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was listed as "my son Robert Gentry."1

Robert Gentry died in October 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Robert Gentry's DEATH was published at Capt. Huets' near Persimmon Creek by Hugh Duffy on October 26, 1820. He had been married to Amelia, who had been vouched for by Sampson Pope in case she could not make bond. She did though with the help of Martha W. Coleman and Samuel Abney. [Samuel Abney would have been her brother-in-law via his marriage to Robert's sister Gilley.] Sampson Pope had said that most of Robert's and Milly's children were grown, and the small estate sale included the widow Amelia and also Amelia Gentry, Jr., Levi Gentry, Abel Gentry, Hezekiah Gentry, John Gentry, Caty Gentry, Gilly Gentry as well as Hezekiah Burnett.2 His estate was probated in November 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. His wife Amelia was administrator of his estate. The heirs were nearly all of legal age. On 4 Dec 1820 Amelia petitioned the court to force the sale of the property. Hugh Duffy was her witness. Amelia Gentry, Martha W. Coleman, and Samuel Abney put up a $1000 bond on 20 Nov 1820.
