Funeral servives will be held from the F. B. Holiness Church, Prattville, at 3 p.m. today with Rev. Grover Oliver and Rev. Luther Lumpkin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville. Leak-Belser-Tucker in charge."

     Lancelot Edward Guy Abney, son of Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney K. C. B. and Agatha Matilda Smith, was born on 4 February 1868.¹ He graduated in 1889 at Trinity College in Cambridge University, England.

He inherited Measham Hall following the death of his father in 1920. He sold the estate to Measham Colliery. The colliery workings later undermined the house, which had to be demolished because of subsidence in 1959.

     William Edward Charles Wootten Abney, son of Henry Charles Wootten Abney and Janet Bentley Littlejohn, was born on 7 January 1921 in Upminster, Essex, England. He was an actor and writer, who appeared in films including the 1960s Exodus and Cleopatra, Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), The Legacy (1978), The Curse of the Pink Panther, (1983), on TV in Coronation Street in 1977, and on stage. He referred to himself as "the last Abney in England". Bill was in the Royal Air Force during WWII, and earned the sobriquet "Ace ABNEY".¹

Gilly married first Joseph Trotter in 1784 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Gilly married second Samuel ABNEY, son of Dannett ABNEY and Cassandra Abney, on 8 May 1819 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Gilly was the daughter of Hezekiah Gentry and was apparently rather well to do. On this was the date they signed a marriage constract agreeing that they would share equally during their marriage as long as they both lived. At the death of the other party they had the right to dispose of the property as they saw fit.³

Gilly ABNEY was named executrix and an heir in the will of Samuel ABNEY dated 25 December 1826 in Jones County, Georgia.

Gilly left a will dated 24 December 1846 in Russell County, Alabama. It named her son William Trotter executor. Hieirs included "my son Geremiah Trotter," "my daughter Elizabeth Adams," "my son Henry Trotter," "my son Hezekiah Trotter," and "my son William Trotter, Sen." Also named were "my son-in-law John Gentry,"my son-in-law Henry Emfinger," "my son-in-law George Emfinger," and "my son-in-law Jacob Westall." The will was filed in Russell county on 27 Apr 1847.¹

     William Henry ABNEY, son of Samuel ABNEY and Mary RILEY, was born circa 1816 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.¹

William married first Sarah Ann Sanders on 16 July 1846 in Monroe County, Alabama. J. Deloach posted the security and Joseph Mitchell, minister, performed the nuptials.²

Sarah died in July 1849 in Monroe County, Alabama, of flux leaving William Henry ABNEY as a widower. She had been sick for two weeks.³

William Henry ABNEY was listed as a resident in George Washington Riley's household in the census report on 6 December 1850 in Monroe County, Alabama. The household was listed as George Riley, a 70 year old farmer born in North Carolina. [George Washington Riley 1780-1857 was the brother of Mary Riley, William's mother] He had real estate valued $400. Also Nancy Riley, age 52 from Virginia, Ginonettia Riley, a 13 year old female born Alabama, and William Abney, a 34 year old farmer born in South Carolina. He had real estate valued $800.

William married second Elizabeth S. Sanders on 20 November 1851 in Monroe County, Alabama. Daniel McColl posted the security and the service was performed by William Longmire, JP.^1,2

Elizabeth died in 1857 in Pineville, Monroe County, Alabama, leaving William Henry ABNEY as a widower.⁴

The household was listed as William Abney, a 43 year old farmer with personal property valued $2000 and real estate $6000. He was born in South Carolina. Also in the household was George Abney age 6 and Polly Abney age 5.

William saw military service in 1862 in Monroe County, Alabama, as a private in the 35th Alabama Infantry. In 1864 he was listed in the 4th Alabama Reserves at age 48.
