Mildred Welch

- Relationship
- 1st cousin 3 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Mildred Welch, daughter of James Barbour Welch and Ann Eustace GIBSON, was born in 1860 in Talladega County, Alabama. She was also known as Minnie.
Mildred Welch appeared on a census, enumerated 12 August 1860, in the household of her parents James Barbour Welch and Ann Eustace Welch in Mardisville, Talladega County, Alabama. She was listed as Mildred Welch, age 1.1
Mildred Welch died on 20 April 1863 in Talladega County, Alabama. From the journal of Thomas Mallory: "We buried J. B. Welch's oldest child at Revd O. Welches, its mother being an Episcopalian, it was conducted with their ceremonies."2
Mildred Welch was the mentioned in a letter written from Frances Anne GIBSON to her stepmother Mary Williams GIBSON on 22 April 1863 in Mardisville, Talladega County, Alabama: "I have to write you the sad news of dear little Minnie’s death. She was sick about five weeks, she had whooping cough and pneumonia combined. She suffered a great deal but was so patient during all of her sickness, indeed she was a remarkable child, one of the most intelligent and interesting children I ever saw, and was the life of the household. While sick she asked her mother to sit on the bed and read the Bible to her, and also asked to get her book and sing some for her and joined in with her. She died in a convulsion, but looked beautifully after death. She was dressed in a tucked jacinet that was made for her christening dress, and the little thing was almost covered with white roses and geranium leaves. The services were performed by an Episcopal minister and she was buried at Pa Welch’s. Tim, Nannie’s little boy, was baptized by the side of sister while she was a corpse, of course it was an impressing scene. Nannie and Mr. Welch are deeply grieved for they had made an idol of the child, but N tries to bear it with a great deal of fortitude. She came here from the burial as Pierre was sick, and I could not go. I was anxious she should remain several days, but she thought Mr. W would be too lonely now his dear little Minnie was gone."
Note: I think there may be transcription errors in the above letter. Mallory's journal gives a burial date of 20 Apr 1863. I believe the correct date of the letter is 22 Apr 1863 rather than 1861. That would be two days after the funeral. Also the description of the child sounds much more like a three year old rather than a one year old baby. Also the brother was Thomas, so I think it should read Tom rather than Tim..3,4

- Relationship
- 1st cousin 3 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Jesse Anderson Brown, son of Asa Anderson BROWN and Mary Halliburton, was born in 1811 in North Carolina.1 He was a professor, soldier, lawyer and delegate to the Tennessee Constiutional Convention in 1870.
He was probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Asa Anderson BROWN, in the 1820 Federal Census of Dickson County, Tennessee.2
Jesse married first Elizabeth B. Warren, daughter of John H. Warren and Mary Hunt Lowe, on 30 June 1839 in Henry County, Tennessee.1,3
Jesse Anderson Brown appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Henry County, Tennessee, 1 male under 5 [John Henry], 2 males 15-19 [???], 1 male 30-39 [Jesse], 1 female 20-29 [Elizabeth]. They had no slaves.
Jesse Anderson Brown and Elizabeth B. Warren appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 17 September 1850 in Henry County, Tennessee. The household was listed as Jesse A. Brown, a 39 year old merchant, norn North Carolina. He had real estate valued $3000. His wife, Elizabeth B. Brown, was 28 and born in Tennessee. Their children were John, 9; James T., 8; and Belle, 3, all born in Tennessee. The 1850 slave schedule showed that he owned 8 slaves.
Jesse married second Amanda R. Warren, daughter of John H. Warren and Mary Hunt Lowe, on 12 May 1857 in Henry County, Tennessee. She was the sister of Jesse's first wife, Elizabeth. They were daughters of John H. Warren (b. 1799 VA) and Mary "Polly" Lowe.1,4
Jesse married third Mary Jane Long on 12 May 1860 in Marshall County, Mississippi.1,5
Jesse Anderson Brown and Mary Jane Long appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 2 June 1860 in Paris, Henry County, Tennessee. The household was listed as J. A. Brown, a 49 year old farmer, born North Carolina. He had real estate valued $17000 and personal estate valued $21000. His wife was M. J. Brown, age 29, born Kentucky. Their children were John H., a 19 year olld clerk; M. B., 13 female; S. D., 8 female; James, 8; and Willie, 1 male. All were born in Tennessee. Also in the household were E. B. Brown, a 60 year old black male farm laborer, born in North Carolina and Isaac Brown, a 14 year old mulatto farm laborer born in Tennessee. A slave schedule shows that Jesse had 22 slaves. They may have lived in a boarding house because they were listed along with H. W. and E. J. Ballard, both 32 year old auctioneers with 5 children. All were born in Tennessee.
