Dr. Alexander Robert Hutchinson1

M, b. 18 January 1790, d. 26 June 1860
Dr. Alexander Robert Hutchinson was born on 18 January 1790 in York County, South Carolina. He was the son of Robert and Mary Hutchinson of Uster, Ireland.1,2

Alexander saw military service on 9 February 1814 in York County, South Carolina, as a corporal in the 13th U. S. Infantry, Capt. T. L. Gourdin. He enlisted as Alex Hutchinson, age 23 [born 1791], 5' 5", grey eyes, sandy hair and fair complexion. His occupation was cabinetmaker. He was discharged at Georgetown, South Carolina 27 May 1815, term of enlistment expired.3 He was medical doctor in 1819 in Autauga County, Alabama. In a book on the family history of his second wife, Annette, it mentions that she married Hutchinson after her first husband died. She said that A. R. Hutchinson was a Dr.1

Dr. Alexander Robert Hutchinson appeared in a newspaper article 16 July 1885 in the Southern Signal, published in Prattville, Alabama. Hutchinson was part of a group that purchased the town site of Washington on the Alabama River in Autauga county. According to the article the company consisted of Gen. Thomas Woodward, Dr. Alexander Hutchinson, and Capt. J. P. House. The place was located on the remains of an old Indian village, grown up in peach and plum trees. They made a proposition to the citizens of the county that they would donate the lots for a courthouse and jail if the county seat was located there, which they accepted. The brick was made and the courthouse construction commenced in 1820 and finished in 1821. The first hotel was erected by J. P. House. The first circuit court was held at the hotel in the fall of 1820, before the courthouse was complete. The first settlers included John Mathews and sons, and Wade Cox, his son-in-law.

Alexander married first Francina Rogers circa 1822 in Alabama. She was first married to Silas Catchings (1788-1822) in Wilkes county, Georgia and the couple moved to Wetumpka. He was ordered to probide a complete inventory of the estate within three months.6

This area was officially Creek territory until the signing of the Treaty of Cusseta in 1832, at which time Talladega county was created. In January 1834, lands were first advertised for sale at a new government land office in Mardisville, just south of present-day Talladega..8

Dr. Alexander Robert Hutchinson was the administrator of Burrows H. BURT's estate on 10 February 1838 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama. Special Orphan Court ordered that Alexander R. Hutchinson, administrator of the estate of Burrows Burt, make final settlement as follows: Margaret Burt $106, A. H. Burt $106, Francina Burt $106, and Elizabeth Burt $106. Ordered that Alexander R.
