William Henry Thomas1
M, b. 8 January 1860, d. 17 April 1932
William Henry Thomas was born on 8 January 1860 in Coosa County, Alabama.1
William married Martha Emma LANGSTON, daughter of Joab Marion LANGSTON and Mary Cleveland WILSON, on 26 December 1885 in Bibb County, Alabama.1
William Henry Thomas died on 17 April 1932 in Bibb County, Alabama, at age 72.1 He was buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama.1
His obituary appeared 21 April 1932 in the The Centreville Press, published in Centreville, Alabama. Prominent Citizen Of Bibb Dies After Brief Illness
On last Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Bibb County lost one of it's most enterprising and religious men in the passing of Mr. Wm. Henry Thomas, of the Antioch community. Mr. Thomas had been in bad health for several years, but was only seriously ill for six days before death.
Mr. Thomas was the son of Micagah and Emmaline Thomas, and was born in Coosa County, January 8, 1860, At an early age he moved to Bibb County where he resided on his fathers "ancient land mark" until his death.
Mr. Thomas at the time of his death was seventy-two years old. All of his life he was a Christian worker for the cause of God, and for forty years was a deacon in the Antioch Baptist Church, having united-there when he was 18 years of age. Dr. L. O. Dawson, in paying tribute to him, said, "It is not so important as to what you are going to have, as to what you are going to be, still more important is to be God's man." This seems a very fitting commemoration to him as he always thought first of his Christian duty in all of his undertakings.
On December 26, 1885, at the age of twenty-five, he was united in marriage to Martha Emma Langston. To this union there was born eight girls and five boys all of whom survive him, except two girls and one boy.
It can not only be said of him that he was very highly esteemed, but also that he was greatly loved. Few men have numbered more friends in all walks of life. He was a man of poise and friendly understanding, of strength and genuineness. He was truly, a patriarch in his time.
His son, Dr. Joe Thomas of Tuscaloosa stayed constantly by his side during the last days of his illness to be of any assistance that he could.
The children surviving are: Dr. Joe L. Thomas, Holt; Pelham Thomas, Tuscaloosa; Ralph C. Thomas, superintendent of education, Russellville; Russell Thomas, Principal Antioch School; Mrs. L. E. Bondurant, Birmingham ; Mrs. R. E. Covington, Buchato, Miss; Mrs. N. C. Carmack, Selma; Mrs. I. J. Qulnn, Clanton; Mrs. Vernon L. St. John, Monroe; Miss Catherine Thomas, Ashby, and 20 grandchildren.
He was a brother of Dr. John Thomas, of Talladega; Mrs. O. P. Head and Miss Fannie Thomas of Columbiana; and the late Dr. M. C. Thomas of Tuscaloosa.
The funeral was held at the Antioch Baptist Church Monday evening at 3:00 o'clock. Many of his friends and relatives were present to pay tribute to their friend and kinsman. The floral offerings were abundant and showed the kindness and love of his friends for him. Services were conducted by- Rev. J. L. Gaines and Dr. L. O. Dawson of Howard College, who was a very close friend of Mr. Thomas and family. Pall bearers: Mr. Clifton Roe, George Graves, E. M. Harkins, Leo Langston of Russellville ; T. Pete Lee, Centreville; Grover Cleveland, Montevallo.1
