Leonard Littleberry Battle was born on 12 November 1836 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.1

Leonard began military service at age 25 on 1 April 1862 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as a private in Company D, 36th Alabama Infantry.He was discribed as Eyes-blue hair-sandy complexion-light height-5ft 10in. His story is tragic, it must have been for him personally at least. He enlisted on 1 April 1862, but was discharged on 29 March 1863 after he furnished a substitute. During the Civil War in the South, if you could provide a substitute to serve in your place, this was "acceptable" and could be done legally. Men with money would therefore pay someone else to serve for them. Little Berry Battle provided such a substitute, his own brother, Thomas B. Battle. Thomas was mortally wounded and captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on 25 November 1863, dying due to his wounds later on 26 December 1863.1
