William Henry COLEMAN, son of John COLEMAN and Nancy BURT, was born on 13 September 1814 in Halifax County, North Carolina.

From the 1885 narrative by Dr. Smith, as told to him by Martha Mathews, "Henry the oldest child remained with his grandfather, engaged in farming one year. He then lived with his uncle Wattie Mathews, attending to farm work until the marriage of his uncle, Martin Burt, February 1830. In the fall of 1831 he went to live with his sister Mrs. Nutting and remained with her two years. After this he lived about in various places, engaged in farm work.

In 1837 or 1838 we find him [Henry Coleman] in Coosa County, as a local preacher in the Methodist Protestant Church. After being licensed to preach, the conference sent him to school for a year or two. In 1841 he married a Miss Mary Smith and soon returned to Prattville, Autauga County, where he engaged in shoe making until about 1854, when he joined the Conference. Afterwards, with the outbreak of war, Henry was sent to various fields of labor. During the war we find him with his uncle James C. Burt at Mardisville, near Talladega where he was employed in the tanyard and making shoes. After the war he drifted about to various localities and finally settled in Fayette County, where he now resides. He has only one child, a daughter. She was married and has seven sons."1

William married Mary SMITH on 31 August 1839 in Coosa County, Alabama.2

William Henry COLEMAN appeared on a census, enumerated 19 October 1850, in the household of his sister Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN in Prattville Washington Beat, Autauga County, Alabama. He was listed as Henry Colman, 35, female, born Tennessee. No occupation was listed. Obviously the sex and birth location were wrong. His wife, Mary, was listed nearby in the household of Joseph and Nancy Muse. She was listed as Mary Colman, 27, also born Tennessee. Possibly she was a servant. There was a Jesse Colman, age 2, listed with Henry who may have been his son, age two, born Alabama.

Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN, daughter of John COLEMAN and Nancy BURT, was born on 2 February 1816 in North Carolina.

Martha married Henry James MATHEWS, son of Jesse MATHEWS and Mary PEEPLES, on 22 October 1831 in Autauga County, Alabama. The couple was married at Cox's Tavern in Washington Town on the Alabama River. Henry served as the county clerk of Autauga county for many years.1,2 As she related her life to Dr. Samuel Smith in 1885, "Martha, the other daughter of John Coleman, married Mr. Henry J. Mathews in November 1831. In 1829 Mr. Mathews was overseer for Dr. William Burt [son of John Burt] on land adjoining the Alcy Pollard place below Washington. In 1830 he made a visit to Georgia to get some property that he had inherited. In that fall he bought out Dr. Burt and carried on a farm on his own account in 1831. Here he made a splendid crop, but being dissatisfied with the location he sold out in the fall to Mr. Alcy Pollard.

[Henry Mathews] then bought land from Jerry Gilbert right south and adjoining Robert Livingston. He farmed here two years, when sold out to Mr. Malcolm Smith and he then went on to a place owned by J. C. Burt on the old Washington and Indian Hill Road, on land now owned by Mrs. Emily Merritt. He had farmed here only one year when he engaged as overseer for Jacob Durden and White, who were farming on the Jacob Durden place. Durden and White were then in partnership, having a lease of the ferry and warehouse at Washington, where they kept a woodyard. In those days of steamboats an immense business was done at this place in furnishing steamboats wood at Washington.

He remained three years with this firm, when he then moved over the river on the Cox place where he overseed one year, 1838. He then moved to Tennessee and remained one year; he then moved into Georgia-Green County-where he remained two years. In November 1841 he left Georgia and returned to his old home in Alabama.

In 1842 he was overseer for Jacob Durden. In January 1843 he moved into Washington and in February was taken sick and died the 4th day of February. Mr. Mathews was a son of Jesse Mathews of Georgia, who was a brother of John Mathews [brother-in-law of Joseph Burt] who came to Washington in 1819 (or 1817?). Henry J. Mathews was the only one of Jesse Mathews' family that ever moved into Alabama. Mr. Mathews was Baptist in faith, but had never attached himself to any church. He, however, had professed religion and expected to have been baptized the very day he died.

Mrs. [Martha] Mathews was thus left alone with four children and nothing to depend on for support but her own exertions. Her children were Jesse W., James F., Mary E., and Caroline E. [Mathews]. After the death of her husband Mrs. Mathews moved up to Prattville and has continued to reside in the neighborhood until present time. As soon as the cotton mill started up in Prattville she found ready employment for all her children, which enabled her not only to make a good living but also to give her children very good advantages in the way of education. Mrs. Mathews has always been an active member of the Baptist church and all her children belong to the same communion."2

Henry died on 4 February 1843 in Washington, Autauga County, Alabama, at age 41 leaving Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN as a widow.3 Martha, left alone with four children following the death of her husband moved to Prattville where she did sewing for townspeople. When the cotton mill started operations in 1846, "she found ready employment for all her children," allowing her "to make a good living" and to achieve for them "very good advantages in the way of education."4

Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN and Nancy BURT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 19 October 1850 in Prattville Washington Beat, Autauga County, Alabama. The household was listed as Martta Mathews, 34 years old, born South Carolina, value of real estate $300. Also in the housefhold were her children: Jesse Mathews, 17, operatorl Mary Mathews, 14, Caroline Mathews, 12, and James Mathews, 9, all born in Alabama. Also in the household were Henry Colman[William Henry Coleman] , age 36, female, born Tennessee. Both of those were wrong. There was also a Jesse Colman, age 2, born Alabama, who was probably Henry's son. His wife was listed a few houses away in the household of Joseph and Nancy Muse, as Mary Colman, 27, born Tennessee. No occupation was listed but in all probability she was a servant. Also in the household of Martha Mathews was her mother, Nancy Colman, 60, born North Carolina, and her sister, Sarah Colman, 20, born Alabama. Finally there was Sarah A. Ellison, 18, born Alabama, relationship unknown, but most likely a sevant or boarder.

Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 25 August 1860 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama. The household was listed as Martha Mathews, 44, with real estate valued at $800 and personal estate $500. Also in the household were her mother, Nancy Coleman, 71, and her children: Jesse Mathews, 27, carpenter; Mary Mathews, 24; Caroline Mathews, 22; and James Mathews, 19.5

Martha Ann Frances COLEMAN died on 8 June 1902 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama, at age 86.6 She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.

Henry James MATHEWS, son of Jesse MATHEWS and Mary PEEPLES, was born on 31 October 1801 in Georgia.1

According to the Burt family history by Dr. Samuel P. Smith, in 1829 Henry James MATHEWS, son-in-law of John and Henry Burt Coleman, was overseer for Dr. William Jefferson BURT on land adjoining the Alcy Pollard place below Washington.2

Hannah (?)

F, b. circa 1780, d. 1835
Hannah (?) was born circa 1780.1

Hannah married John BURT, son of Joseph BURT and Elizabeth (?), circa 1814 in Georgia. This is a "best guess" for the marriage date and place. The marriage could have taken place in Tattnall, Hancock or Baldwin counties.

John died in September 1827 in Autauga County, Alabama, leaving Hannah (?) as a widow.2

Hannah (?) was probably the female age 50-59 listed in the household of Stephen M. BURT, in the 1830 Federal Census of Capt Davis' District, Autauga County, Alabama. The household consisted of Stephen and Ann, maybe a brother age 15-19, and probably Hannah.

Hannah (?) died in 1835 in Talladega County, Alabama. Her estate was probated on 19 November 1835 in Talladega County, Alabama. Alexander R. Hutchinson applied for administration of the estate of Hannah Burt, dec'd, late of Autauga county. The $2000 bond was posted by A. R. Hutchinson, John W. Bishop and A. R. Barclay. Hutchinson was named administrator.

Why did Hannah move to Talladega? Alexander R. Hutchinson purchased a land patent from the Mardisville General Land Office 5 Aug 1837 in section 2, township 19-S, range 4-E. The former Creek Indian territory were first open for sale in January 1834. Perhaps Hutchinson had moved to Talladega county and Hannah went to live with him and his wife.

On 16 Apr 1840 Alexander Hutchinson as administrator of her estate presented an inventory of her estate. He said he had received $582.27 1 Jan 1833 from Wm. H. Hansford, her former agent. In 18339 he received another $41.00 from that same agent. Her property was listed as one bed & furniture $30.00, Pot & oven $3.92, one table $3.00, one axe $1.50, one low post bedstead $3.00, and one cow & calf $15.00 for a total of $66.42. With interest the total value of the estate was $1073.01.3
