Mardis L. WOOD1

M, b. 14 August 1859, d. 2 July 1931
Relationship
2nd cousin 2 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Mardis L. WOOD, son of Pleasant Green WOOD and Catherine Webb, was born on 14 August 1859 in Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama.1

Mardis L. WOOD appeared on a census, enumerated 31 July 1860, in the household of Pleasant Green WOOD and Kate Webb in Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama.2,3

Mardis was educated between 1866 and 1878 in Dallas Academy, Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. According to a classmate, "Mardis Wood was as smart a boy as there was in the class." He went on to say that Mardis "was slightly crippled all his life."4

Mardis L. WOOD appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1870, in the household of his parents Pleasant Green WOOD and Kate Webb in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. He was 10. The enumerator mispelled his name as Morris.5

Mardis L. WOOD appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1880, in the household of Pleasant Green WOOD and Julia V. Roach in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama.6 He was working as court clerk for his father in 1882. He was also the foreman of the Hook and Ladder Fire Company and very much involved in Democratic politics of the time.

A friend of Mardis tells the story in 1948 of how avid Mardis was about Democratic politics: "During the excitement in the year 1892 when Rufus Kolb, the third party candidate, ran for governor against Col. Jones of Montgomery, the Democratic candidate, many of the old line Democrats were for Kolb and set up a table in the court house yard to keep tab.

In the afternoon when things were getting serious and it looked as if Kolb would carry the election in Selma, these two boys [Mardis Wood and Joe Evans], pretending to be drunk and quarreling with one another, pulled their pistols and worked over to where the Kolbites were keeping the tab.

Mardis Wood grabbed the tally sheet from the Kolb table and tore it to shreds. Lots of quarreling and cussing but no serious damage resulted. The Democrats won the election, according to their vote. It just had to be done, and these boys were the ones who planned and executed it."7

According to an 22 Sep 1894 issue of the Jacksonville Republican of Calhoun county, Mardis was a Democratic candidate for Congress from the 4th district of Alabama. He was the favorite in the race, but abruptly withdrew in the midst of the campaign "for reasons that are purely personal, and which did not exist at the time the nomination was made..." He had been scheduled to campaign in Jacksonville on the day that he announced his withdrawal.

Mardis married Mary C. (?) in 1895.8

Mardis L. WOOD witnessed the death of his brother, Percy WOOD, on 21 April 1896 in Montgomery, Alabama. According to the 22 April 1896 edition of the New York Times, Sheriff Robert Kennedy of Dallas County shot and killed Percy Wood and possibly fatally wounded his brother, Mardis L. Wood. The sheriff's weapon was a double-barreled shotgun and the shotout occured at the Union Station train depot and in front of the Windsor Hotel. According to the story, the brothers had just alighted from a train when the sheriff opened fire amongst a large crowd of people. Percy was shot in the back as Mardis ran for cover. Mardis drew a pistol and fired five shots at Kennedy without hitting him. The sheriff reloaded and fired a total of six shots at Mards, shattering his right shoulder and breaking his left arm.

The trouble grew out of attention said to have been paid by Mardis to Kennedy's wife. Wood had been hiding out of state, but had returned to attend the Democratic State Executive Committee, of which he was a member. Mardis survived his wounds and the sheriff was later acquited by a jury.

Mardis L. WOOD appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 7 June 1900 in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. The household was listed as Mardis Wood, a 39 year-old lawyer who was born August 1860 in Alabama. His father was also born in Alabama while his mother was born in New York. Mary C. Wood, his 38 year-old wife, was born February 1862 in Georgia, which was also the birthplace of her parents. They couple had been married five years, but had no children. Rooming with them was Wesley Rogers, a 54 year-old dentist born in New York.8

A 1901 newspaper tribute to his father, Judge Wood, says of Mardis that he "has long been prominent in the city and county government and took a distinquished part in the rehabilitation of the city during the dark days of the Reconstruction. He is at present connected with the sheriff's office."9

Mardis L. WOOD appeared on a census enumerated 13 January 1920 in Ward 3, Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. He was one of eight rooming in the lodging of a Mr. Threadgill at 1117 Selma Avenue. Mardis was 58 years old and a sergeant in the police department. Living with him was his daughter, Margaret Wood, age 11, who was born in Colorado.10

Mardis L. WOOD appeared on a census enumerated 8 April 1930 in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. He was one of eight lodgers in a hotel at 1117 Selma Avenue managed by Clarence A. Holley. Mardis was listed as a 62-year-old widower whose occupation was investigator.11

Mardis L. WOOD died on 2 July 1931 at the Southern Hotel in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, at age 71. He was a widower and the cause of his death was myocarditis. The informant listed on his death certificate was his sister, Grace Jordan. Burial was to be in an "independent cemetery."1
