Listed with him were his wife, Mary Palmer, age 22; Allace [Mary Alice], age 9; Willis, age 7; and Thos. Palmer, age 15. The occupation of Thomas was farm laborer, relationship unknown.2
Shirley saw military service during the War for Southern Independence where he served first under Allum's Company, 5th Georgia Infantry (State Guards) for one six month tour of duty. He served a second six month tour in Fannin's Company K, Georgia Reserves.3

Shirley and Mary moved from Chattahoochie County, Georgia to Rice, Navarro County, Texas, 1885. Some of Mary Ann's brothers are believed to have joined her in Texas. The Palmers purchased two lots side by side on Calhoun Street in Rice. Each lot was 25 foot wide by 100 foot deep. They built a house and lived there for about ten years. Today there is little left of the town of Rice.4,1
