Susannah Nunn1
F, b. circa 1782, d. 1838
Susannah Nunn was born circa 1782 in South Carolina. She was the daughter of Joseph William Nunn and Nancy Ann Mason.2 She was also known as Susan.
Susannah married John ABNEY, son of Nathaniel ABNEY and Isabella MADISON, circa 1808 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.1,3,4
She was probably the female age 26 to 45 listed in the household of her husband, John ABNEY, in the 1810 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, She would have been born 1766-1784, and would have been about 28 years old.
Susannah Nunn was named an heir in the will of John ABNEY dated 20 June 1812 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. It is my desire, at my decease, that after all my lawful debts are paid, that my beloved wife, shall have a certain tract of land known by the name of Bolger Tract, two hundred acres more of less, to extend toward the west, beginning at a spring, Urban Nicholson uses water out of, running to an old road that crosses the Charleston Road, and that leads to Paul Abney, from thence along said road to land originally granted to Alexander Kennedy, that there shall be built on said land, a dwelling house, 22 feet by 16 feet, with other necessary out houses. Dwelling house to be built out of logs, well hewed, high enough for stairs and lodging above, the said tract of land together with premises thereon she accepts in lieu of her dower of all my lands. The above house to have a stone chimney up to the mantle, tree sticks and dirt afterwards.5,6
John died on 23 July 1812 in Edgefield, South Carolina, at age 51 leaving Susannah Nunn as a widow. She would have been about 30 years old.7
Susannah married second Edmund Spearman circa 1813 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was named the guardian of her daughters, Sara Isabella and Ann Abney. His first wife is believed to have been Susan Atkinson, who died sometime after 1810.8
She was probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Edmund Spearman, in the 1820 Federal Census of Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina, She was born 1776-1794, and estimated at age 38.
Edmund died in 1827 in Laurens County, South Carolina, leaving Susannah as a widow. Sometime after his death she moved from Newberry/Laurens area back to Edgefield, likely to be near family.
Susannah Nunn appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, Susan Spearman-- 1 male 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19 (Ann, age 19), 1 female 20-29 (Sara Isabella, age 21), 1 female 40-49 (Susannah, age 48), and 7 slaves.
The following lawsuit explains some of the distribution of Edmund Spearman's estate. The suit dated 1831 and in Newberry County was John S. Edwards vs. Susannah Spearman. Apparently he made bond with Edmund Spearman and Susannah Spearman when Edmund Spearman became guardian of Isabel and Ann Abney, daughters of John Abney (d. 1812) and Susannah Nunn Abney. Edwards did not want to be held liable since Edmund was dead. Susannah was having difficulties since she had put her name on the bond intending to be a married woman. I guess she was depending on Spearman. In plain English (although very difficult to read) the suit says that Susannah Spearman was formerly married to John Abney and that Isabel and Ann were their daughters. John Abney had left them quite a bit of money that had not been delivered by Robert Floyd, Edmund Spearman's administrator. There are lots of other hard-to-read details, but the result is that the girls were to be treated as other creditors and to get their part of of their father's estate which had been in the hands of Edmund Spearman.9
Susannah Nunn died in 1838 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
Her son-in-law, William Coleman [father of John Abney Coleman] was administrator of her estate. She gave a bed and furniture appraised at $20 to her daughter Nancy Sample, wife of Lewis Sample during her lifetime. On the accounting, there was a note that William Coleman had received the same.
Accounting for the return dated January 30, 1840 mentioned money coming into the estate from Lewis Sample, J. C. Ready, and James Coleman. J. C. Ready married Laura Ann Coleman, daughter of William Coleman and Sarah Isabella Abney.
On January 1, 1840, settlement was made with Lewis Sample getting his wife's share of $555.18 and James Coleman getting a share of $575.18. Apparently he had not got the $20 bed while Susannah Spearman was alive. He would have had to have been married to one of Susannah Spearman's daughters to be getting an equal share with Nancy.
James S. Coleman didn't die until 1858. He had been married to Anne Abney who died in 1852 and must have remarried because his estate names a widow named Molly.10
Susannah married John ABNEY, son of Nathaniel ABNEY and Isabella MADISON, circa 1808 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.1,3,4

- [S1232] This date is an estimate based upon the context. It is NOT proven by any documentation., In 1810 Susannah was 26-44 so born 1766-1784. In 1820 she was 26-44 so 1776-1794. In 1830 she was 40-49 so 1781-1790. Based on all that I'm estimating c1782 which fits in all three periods.
