Nathaniel ABNEY "The Loyalist"

M, b. circa 1741
Relationship
1st cousin 6 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Nathaniel ABNEY "The Loyalist", son of Paul ABNEY, was born circa 1741 in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Nathaniel ABNEY "The Loyalist" appeared in a newspaper article 20 November 1779 in the Virginia Gazette, published in Williamsburg, Virginia. "Charles Knight and Nathaniel Abney of Amelia, were lately taken together with a number of implements for making printing types, in order to counterfeit our treasury notes, and were yesterday committed to the publick jail in this city."

There is a related article in the Maryland Historical Magazine titled "Counterfeiting in Colonial Maryland." In it a man named DePriest confessed in May 1767 that Joseph Wilcox and John Cox, both of Frederick County, came to his home in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to have him counterfeit Maryland eight dollar bills. Nathaniel Abney procured the printing types and ink from Williamsburg. David Lyles did the printing.

R. Robert Abney responded to a query on the Abney surname board on Ancestry.com that he believes this to have been Nathaniel Abney "The Loyalist", who attempting to destabilize the colonial currency against the crown (England). Further he believes him to have been a son of Paul Abney, baptised 1699. His reasoning is that all of George Abney's sons were in South Carolina by this time leaving only the sons of Paul and Abner Abney stayed in Virginia.. and Abner left a will naming only two sons. Those sons did not name any of their sons, Nathaniel. That leaves the obvious choice to be Paul.1

Eustacia Caroline Floyd

F, b. 13 March 1834, d. 19 July 1913
Eustacia Caroline Floyd was born on 13 March 1834 in Newberry County, South Carolina.

Eustacia married first John Abney Coleman, son of William Coleman and Sara Isabella ABNEY, in 1852 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Eustacia married second Dr. John Pope ABNEY, son of Joel ABNEY and Martha Coleman, in 1859 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She was previously married to John Abney Coleman.

Eustacia Caroline Floyd and Dr. John Pope ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 6 August 1860 in Saluda Regiment, Richardsonville, Edgefield County, South Carolina. The household was listed as John P. Abney, a 28-year-old physician, and Eustacia, his 25-year-old wife. He had real estate valued at $9000 and $10,000 in personal property. Also in the household was AJ Coleman [Amelia Isabell Coleman 1854-1935], 7, personal estate $7,000 and Claudia Abney, 1. Amelia Coleman was his step-daughter.

Eustacia married third John Wesley Chappell Jr. in 1865 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

She was the administrator of Dr. John Pope ABNEY's estate on 22 November 1865 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The following is from research by Bootsie Cousins: Dr. John Pope Abney (Edgefield, SC Box 90, #3611). Included in the package was the petition from Eustacia Abney applying for letters of administration. She says that "her husband John P. Abney departed this life on or about the 17th day of February 1865 being killed in battle" . . . He and Eustacia had three minor children: Claudia, Martha, and Johnny. He also had step-daughter Amelia Coleman, also a minor

In November 1865, Thomas O. Floyd writes a letter in behalf of Eustacia asking the Court what to do about the estate. He lists all the problems in trying to administer an estate in November 1865. The "letter" is very interesting but hard to read. John Pope Abney's estate included $18,000 or so in notes -- most of them doubtful. The plantation had a surplus of stock but that was not a plus at the time. He mentions again that the heirs are Mrs. Abney and four children -- three of them daughters. Johnnie/Johnny is a GIRL. [She is on the 1870 census for Eustacia and her 3rd husband Wesley Chappell in Newberry.] Thomas Floyd also says that John Pope Abney had been guardian for probably Amelia Coleman. He also says that Eustacia has bought a tract of land in Newberry County with her own money from the estate of Margaret Floyd and plans to move there. He keeps talking about the conditions of the times and makes suggestions.

The fact that Eustacia Abney was moving to Newberry explains why the guardian estates are in Newberry.
1869: Claudia Abney and Johnnie Abney, minors - Joel R. Abney, guardian; Box 117, #316
1870: Martha "Mattie" Abney, minor - Joel R. Abney, guardian; Box 114, #306
Joel R. Abney was John Pope Abney's brother and therefore their uncle and a logical choice for a guardian. Wesley Chappell already had a bunch of kids, so maybe he didn't need any more.

In John Pope Abney's estate papers' accounting for 1867, Eustacia is listed as Eustacia C. Grierson. By 1870, she is Eustacia Chappell. She married John Abney Coleman, who died in 1857. Amelia Coleman is Eustacia's and John A. Coleman's daughter. Eustacia married John Pope Abney shortly after Coleman died and had Claudia who was born about 1859. John Pope Abney died in 1865, and by 1867 she was married to ___ Grierson who must have also died, so that by 1870 she was Mrs. Chappell.1

Eustacia Caroline Floyd and John Wesley Chappell Jr. appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 10 August 1870 in Moons Township, Saluda Old Town, Newberry County, South Carolina. The household was listed as Wesley Chappell, a 43 year old farmer, real estate valued $4000, personal estate valued $1000; his implied wife Eustacia Chappell, age 33; Stanmore Chappell, age 19, farm laborer; John B. Chappell, age 16, attending school; Artemisia Chappell, 14, attending school; James B. Chappell, age 11, attending school; Nancy Chappell, age 6, at home; Claudia Abney, age 12, attending school; Mattie Abney, age 8, at home; and John Abney, female, age 6, at home. All were born in South Carolina.2

Eustacia Caroline Floyd and John Wesley Chappell Jr. appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 17 June 1880 in Ninety-Six, Abbeville County, South Carolina. The household was listed as J. W. Chappell, a 54 year old farmer; his wife E. C. Chappell, age 45, keeping house; his granddaughter Carrie Richburg, age 6; his, step-daughter Mattie Abney, age 17, at home; and his stepson-in-law George Abney, age 26, lawyer. All were born in South Carolina. George and Mattie had married within the census year.3

She brought a suit for partition against Dr. George Warren ABNEY in September 1887 in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina. She was trying to force the sale of the property off Greenwood street that Mattie purchased from R. W. Lites in 1883. The property was put up for sale by court order in October 1887 and Mrs. M. E. Abney bought it, then turns around and sells it to Dr. J. D. Neel.4 She was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina.

Eustacia Caroline Floyd died on 19 July 1913 in Greenwood County, South Carolina, at age 79.
