The following is from the book Newberry County South Carolina Hisrorical and Genealological by George Leland Summer, Jr. It was published in 1950 by the author. The section is "Genealogies and Some Pioneer Families." The page in my edition is p. 273. Summer says that the decendants of the Schumpert pioneers mostly lived in the "Dutch Fork"area of South Carolina (the land in the fork of where the Broad River and the Saluda River meet). A large part of that area is now Lexington County and lower Newberry County, and now Saluda County (formerly Edgefield District).

Frederick Schumpert was one of the early settlers and lived in Lexington County, not far from the Saluda River. Frederick married Mary Kinard. Jacob Kinard Schumpert was one of their children. The following is what Summer wrote about him:

"Jacob K. Schumpert was a prominent mill man living on Bush River. He was a man of fine character and physique. There is an interesting sketch in the 'Anals of Newberry' about him, he is referred to as 'A kind and hospitable gentleman, both he and his wife were very fond of company, expecially the company of young people, often having a house full for weeks at a time'. He believed strongly in justice and right and manifested this spirit in his life. The wife of Jacob K. Schumpert was Harriet Abney, daughter of Zachariah Abney, son of the Revolutionary War soldier killed by the Tories.

They left several children: Dr. John I., a prominent physician who located in Louisiana; Mrs. E. M. Kingsmore, who died in Birmingham, left sons, one of whom married Laura Bowman of Newberry, Mrs. C. T. Wells of Newberry, widow of the late Osborne Wells, parents of Henry, Thomas, Jacob (dead), Amos (living in Minneapolis, Minn.), Harriet (wife of Prof. C. L. Trabert of Newberry College), Mary (wife of Thomas Harrell), Ruth (wife of J. L. Welling), Mrs. E. A. Cassidy, wife of the late Rev. Mr. Cassidy, presiding elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; Osborne L. and Frederick A. Schumpert."3 He was buried in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina.

Jacob Kinard Schumpert died on 14 May 1885 in Prosperity, Newberry County, South Carolina, at age 77.4

John Hamilton

M, d. 1793
John Hamilton was granted land 31 May 1784 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina. The 200 acres was on a curve of the Saluda River.

From History of Edgefield County by John Abney Chapman: In the same general region of country, not far from Persimmon Creek, settled Crawford Peny and the Merchants, whose names are still well known in that community. The Barneses also came in at an early day. There was also a Captain John Hamilton and his brother Edward. These, however, did not come to Edgefield until after the Revolutionary War. Of this I am not right sure. Captain Hamilton was an officer in the British army, serving under his brother Col. Hamilton, who commanded a regiment in the left wing of the army at the Battle of Camden and aided greatly in the defeat of the Americans. These Hamiltons were Scotch, but they had been living in South Carolina—Lee, in his memoirs, says Norfolk, Virginia—engaged in mercantile pursuits before the war, but, unfortunately, took the wrong side in the contest, as many good men did. At their death they left very little property. I know of no descendants.

John Hamilton died in 1793 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

His estate was probated in 1793 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina. Paul Abney was the administrator. Buyers in the state sale included Paul Abney, John Abney, William Kennedy, Nathaniel Abney, Dannett Abney, Elijah Pope Abney and Joel Abney.1
