John saw military service in 1779 in Virginia as an ensign and lieutenant in Capt. Peyton Harrison's company of Col. Christian Febiger's regiment in the Virginia Line during the American Revolution.

John married Mary WILLS, daughter of Matthew WILLS and Lucy Jones, on 17 January 1785 in Orange County, North Carolina.1,2

John was a merchant on Indian Creek in Edgefield (now saluda) County, South Carolina.

Joel P. ABNEY sold a tract of land to John Coleman on 31 January 1813 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. John Coleman, Sr. pays Joel Abney $323.85 for a 180-acre tract that was part of a 315-acre tract belonging to the heirs of Claborn Gorman and sold at the Court of Common Pleas to Joel Abney. . . Witnesses: Austin Eskeridge, James Coleman, and Urbane Nicholson. Proved by Urbane Nicholson before William Spragins February 22, 1816; Recorded February 23, 1816.3
