Sanford Hufstutler was an early day stockman, Confederate Army soldier, Indian fighter and Texas Ranger according to information from 1856-1983 San Saba County (TX) History, Copyright 1983.
According to information received from Waneta M. Vickers: "Spelled as Sanford Hutsteler on some reports. Member of the Texas Rangers in the early 1860's. Fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side. Lived in Lampasas and San Saba County, Texas. Went to California in a wagon train with Sanford's uncle Henry Huffstutler, but returned to TX about 1870 or 1871. The following comments were found in "THE CALL OF THE SAN SABA" written by Alma Ward Hamrick and published in 1969 - "Sanford Hufstutler, father of Mrs. Hugh Miller, served in J. J. Callan's Company (Civil War/Confederate rank) and Sanford Hustutler married Elizabeth Brown October 27, 1865, Wm. Thaxton officiating."
Tombstone located in Chadwick Cemetery, Lampasas County, TX: the back reads, "S. Hufstutler came to Tex. in 1840. Was a ranger in 1860-61, fought in Civil War. Had many encounters with Indians. Married Elizabeth Brown in 1865. Two pioneers who blazed the trails and helped make the west. They did their duty here on earth and earned their haven of rest."
Sanford married Jerusha Elizabeth BROWN, daughter of Asa Madison BROWN and Emily Catherine Rottenberry, on 28 October 1865 in Lampasas, Lampasas County, Texas. They had seven children.1

James Carson was born in 1756 in South Carolina.1
James began military service on 2 March 1776 in South Carolina when he enlisted in the 6th South Carolina state regiment. This is one of several service listings for James Carson that may or may not be the same person. He is also shown as a lieutenant with William Abney under Col. Pickens during 1782 and as a lieutenant in the Charleston Artillery during 1780 and 1781.2,3
James married Sarah ABNEY, daughter of Nathaniel ABNEY and Isabella MADISON, in 1783 in South Carolina.4,5,6,1,7
His land was said to border the land patent of John ABNEY in 1785 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina. The land plat was for 640 acres on Tosety Creek and Plum Branch of the Saluda River and was surveyed by Phillip Waters. His land was bordered by James Carson, A. Duck, John Gorman, Alexander Kenida [Kennedy], and Thomas Spragins.8

Signed James Carson and Sarah Carson. It was witnessed by Gilson Yarbrough and Thomas Butler, who were sworn by oath 5 Aug 1789 before William Anderson, J. P.9

That same date he also bought another 82.25 acres of the northwest subdivision of fractional section 1, same township and range. Both of these sections were on the Tombigbee River on the border with Choctaw county. It was located just north of the town of Myrtlewood.10
