Nathaniel W. Townsend1

     Nathaniel W. Townsend was born in 1786 in South Carolina.1

Nathaniel married Elizabeth ABNEY, daughter of John ABNEY and Rachel Elizabeth LARK, on 30 August 1814 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.1

Nathaniel left a will dated 14 March 1845 in Meriwether County, Georgia. His heirs were his wife Elizabeth, who was also his executor, daughters Martha AA (Ann Abney) Townsend and Elizabeth CPL (Charlotte Polly Lark) Townsend. Martha was already married before her sister Elizabeth was born. His will was probated 1 Nov 1847 in Meriwether county.2

Nathaniel W. Townsend died on 11 September 1847 in Meriwether County, Georgia.1

She was probably the female age 16 to 25 listed in the household of her husband, Joseph Rearden, in the 1820 Federal Census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, She would have been about 19 years old.

She was probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her husband, Joseph Rearden, in the 1830 Federal Census of Edgefield District, South Carolina. She would have been 29 years old.

She was probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, Joseph Rearden, in the 1840 Federal Census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, She would have been 39 years old.

The household was listed as Joseph Rearden, a 79 year old planter, with real estate valued $6000, and his implied wife Nancy Rearden, age 49. Also in the household were John Rearden, a 31 year old farmer; America P. Barrett, female age 20; Caroline A. Barrett, age 3; and George M. Barrett, age 14, attended school. All were born in South Carolina.

Nancy ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 8 August 1860 in Buntonville, Edgefield District, South Carolina. The household was listed as Mrs. N. Rearden (Nancy), a 59 year old widow with real estate valued $2,500 and personal estate $12,000; Mrs. F. A. Mooney, age 30; and Carolina Mooney, age 13, attended school. All were born in South Carolina. Carolina is probably the Caroline Barrett, age 3, from the 1850 census.

Nancy ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 24 August 1870 in Blocker, Edgefield County, South Carolina. The household was listed as Nancy Rairden (sp), was a 69 year old widow, keeping house, born South Carolina, with real estate valued $900 and personal estate $250. Blocker used the Edgefield post office.

Nancy ABNEY died on 12 July 1873 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, at age 72.

Joseph Rearden

M, b. 11 October 1771, d. 30 November 1852
     Joseph Rearden was born on 11 October 1771 in South Carolina. He was the son of Timothy Rearden.

Joseph began military service at age 41 on 16 November 1812 in Nathchez, Mississippi, during the War of 1812 when he enlisted as a private in the 2nd regiment of South Carolina Militia. He was enisted by Lt. Cross for three years. He was discribed as a 30 year old carpenter from South Carolne, 5'8" with blue eyes, dark hair and a light complexion. Later his widow Nancy Rearden filed for his pension, date unknown.

Joseph married Nancy ABNEY, daughter of John ABNEY and Susan Isabella POPE, circa 1819 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Joseph Rearden appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, Joseph Rearden - 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 45 or older (Joseph, age 49), 1 female 16-25 (Nancy, age 19), and 8 slaves. Nancy could be the mother of the son under 10, but not the male 16-18, which suggests that Joseph had at least one previous wife.

Arthur Dillard

     Arthur Dillard was born circa 1774 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Arthur married Mary Polly ABNEY, daughter of John ABNEY and Rachel Elizabeth LARK, in 1794 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

He was named executor and an heir in the will of John ABNEY dated 20 June 1812 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. It is my desire that Arthur Dillard should have one tract of Fifty acres of land whereon James Neale formerly lived, at the rate of one hundred dollars, also one hundred and twenty acres of land granted to Abner Deen on bounty and conveyed by his brother George Deen to me.1,2

Arthur Dillard died in May 1840 in Monroe County, Georgia.

John O'Neall

M, b. 4 December 1813, d. 11 October 1897

     John O'Neall, son of Dr. Charles O'Neall and Charlotte ABNEY, was born on 4 December 1813 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He was the son of Hugh O'Neall II and Mary Parkins, the daughter of a prominent Quaker.

John married second Damaris Rushton in 1845 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She was his first wife's first cousin, daughter of Joseph & Nancy Rushton.1

John O'Neall and Damaris Rushton moved from Edgefield, South Carolina to Gonzales County, Texas, November 1853 The following is an extract from John O'Neall's journal of the voyage from South Carolina. December 28th, 1853 Wednesday: "Today reached Gonzales the county site [sic] of Gonzales County the place of our destination. Crossed the Guadalupe River came eight miles to Five Mile Creek to Charles O'Neal a little before night... My family as composed of five whites and four blacks making nine in number. Six head of horses and two waggons, one a four horse and the other a two horse wagon. We were 63 days making the trip... Thus ends our journeys the 28th day of December 1853 from Edgefield District South Carolina to Gonzales County Texas."

John O'Neall died on 11 October 1897 in Gonzales County, Texas, at age 83. He was buried in Floyd Chapel Cemetery, Wrightsboro, Gonzales County, Texas.2

Damaris Rushton1

F, b. 22 June 1827, d. 24 February 1905
     Damaris Rushton was born on 22 June 1827 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.1

Damaris married John O'Neall, son of Dr. Charles O'Neall and Charlotte ABNEY, in 1845 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She was his first wife's first cousin, daughter of Joseph & Nancy Rushton.1

Damaris Rushton and John O'Neall moved from Edgefield, South Carolina to Gonzales County, Texas, November 1853 The following is an extract from John O'Neall's journal of the voyage from South Carolina. Damaris Rushton died on 24 February 1905 in Beeville, Bee County, Texas, at age 77.1 She was buried in Floyd Chapel Cemetery, Wrightsboro, Gonzales County, Texas.1

Her obituary appeared 2 March 1905 in the Obituary Gonzales Inquirer, published in Gonzales, Texas. Mrs. Damaris O'Neall died yesterday at 12:20 o'clock at the residence of her step daughter, Mrs. Sallie O'Neall, at Beeville, Texas. She was 77 years, 8 months and 2 days of age, and leaves six children; three sons, Messrs. C. J. O'Neall, Gonzales; Hugh O'Neall, Live Oak, and J. W. O'Neall, St. Louis, and three daughters, Mesdames. A. S. Billings, Smiley; M. A. Blackiston, Floresville, and Miss Lizzie O'Neall, Floresville, to mourn her death.

Mrs. O'Neall was an ex-resident of Gonzales county, having located here in the year 1853. She resided in the Five Mile section until the year 1900, when she removed to Beeville, where she has since resided with stepdaughter, Mrs. Sallie O'Neall. She was the relict of the late Mr. John O'Neall, whose death occurred several years ago, and who was well known Overby the county.

The remains will be brought to Gonzales this afternoon at 4 o'clock, and will be carried to the home of Mr. C. J. O'Neall, at LaFayette place where they will be held until Tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock, when they will be carried to the Floyd's Chapel cemetery for interment. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Gordon, pastor of the Leesville circuit.

Willie Hazel

     Willie Hazel was born circa 1808 in South Carolina.

Willie married Hiram ABNEY, son of William "Uncle Billy" ABNEY and Ann BARNES, circa 1819 in South Carolina.

She appeared on a census, enumerated 27 September 1850, in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Cicero Augustus Hogan in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. She was with her husband, Hiram, and she was listed as Willy Abney, age 42, born in South Carolina.

Willie Hazel died after 1880 in Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.

     Cicero Augustus Hogan was born on 25 April 1823 in Limestone County, Alabama. He was the son of Elijah Hogan and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Lampkin.1

Cicero married Elliot ABNEY, daughter of Hiram ABNEY and Willie Hazel, on 17 December 1846 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.1

Came to Mississippi in 1832; married Miss Elliott Abney, Dec. 17, 1846. Baptised Aug. 27, 1848; ordained deacon May 12, 1853. Died in triumphant faith Dec. 12, 1900.
