James P. NORRIS

M, b. circa 1842, d. 13 December 1863
James P. NORRIS, son of Nelson Booker NORRIS and Eliza Ann Adams, was born circa 1842 in Dallas County, Alabama. James P. NORRIS also went by the name of Buddy.

James P. NORRIS appeared on a census, enumerated 15 October 1850, in the household of his parents Nelson Booker NORRIS and Eliza Ann Adams in Warrenton, Dallas County, Alabama. He was recorded as Buddy Norris, age 8, born Alabama.

James P. NORRIS appeared on a census, enumerated 4 August 1860, in the household of his father Nelson Booker NORRIS in Mount Willing, Lowndes County, Alabama. He was enumerated as J. N. Norris, age 15, born Alabama.

James began military service on 14 May 1862 in Montgomery, Alabama, where he enlisted as a 3rd sergeant in Company G, First battalion of Hilliard's Alabama Legion, CSA. The company was comanded by Capt. J. H. Holt. By Jan 1863 James had been promoted to 1st sergeant. They fought at Chickamauga as part of Gracie's Brigade, losing half of the men engaged.

The Legion was disolved 25 Nov 1863, with companies A-D consolidated with the 3rd battalion to form the 60th Alabama Infantry. Companies C, F and G became the 23rd Alabama Sharpshooters Battalion.

A note on a muster roll said that Sgt. James P. Norris "died at his father's house in South Carolina[sic] December 13, 1863 of wound received at Chickamauga, 20 Sep 1863." This was on a roll of the 23rd Sharpshooters, but James' company was still part of Hilliard's Legion at Chickamauga. An October 1862 muster roll said that he had been furloughed from Hospital in Atlanta to Montgomery. He apparently returned home to Fort Deposit where he died of his wounds.

James P. NORRIS died on 13 December 1863 in Fort Deposit, Lowndes County, Alabama. He died of wounds suffered September 20th during the Battle of Chickamauga. The Confederate memorial at Hayneville to those who died during the war includes James Norris, Company G, 23rd Alabama Bat'n, killed at Chickamauga, TN.

Peyton Smith Graves
1841-1893
Peyton Smith GRAVES, son of Giles Nance GRAVES and Martha Ann Brinson, was born on 27 September 1841 in Texas.1

Peyton Smith GRAVES appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 3 June 1880 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. The household was listed as E. W. Cook, a 24 year old grocery clerk, born in Mississippi and P. S. Graves, a 36 year old grocery clerk, born in Texas. His parents were born in Georgia. The two men lived in a house on Spring Street.

Peyton married first Ella Tucker on 31 December 1884 in Anderson County, Texas. She was the daughter of W.H. and Mary E. Tucker.2

Peyton married second Mary Elizabeth Parks on 8 October 1891 in Anderson County, Texas. She was the daughter of Felix G. and Margaret Ann Hague Parks. She was the widow of Samuel Augusta Rollins, who she married in 1873. He died in 1889.3,4

Peyton Smith GRAVES died on 18 October 1893 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, at age 52.1 He was buried in Palestine City Cemetery, Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. The funeral was held at the family residence on Langston Street.1

Peyton Smith GRAVES appeared in a newspaper article 19 October 1893 in the Dallas Morning News, published in Dallas, Texas. Peyton Graves a Corpse and Nat Blackshear Mortally Wounded-- Palestine, Anderson County, Tex., Oct. 18– This evening at 5:30 Peyton Graves, a grocery merchant and an old citizen of Palestine, entered Fox & Luxas’ store on Spring street where Nat Blackshear was employed as a salesman, and with some remarks which no one overheard, both men began shooting at each other. Graves fired four shots when his pistol, which was a 44, hung fire and would not discharge. Blackshear emptied his 38 caliber. Graves walked out of the building and down the sidewalk a few feet and fell. He was carried home and died as they were entering the gate. Blackshear was shot in the stomach which may prove fatal.

About eighteen months ago Blackshear married the youngest daughter of the widow Rollins in this city without the mother’s consent. The marriage was a very romantic one, the couple have stolen a march on Mrs. Rollins by the young lady’s jumping from a window while the rest of the family were asleep. A license was obtained in Cherokee county and the marriage was a success. The young couple have lived happily together since then and now have one child. Shortly after the marriage of her daughter, Mrs. Rollins married Peyton Graves, the man who now lies in his coffin with three bullets in his right breast. Hard feelings between the Blackshears and Graves seemed to exist from that day until his death.

Several months ago, Mrs. Blackshear, daughter of Mrs. Graves, entered suit in the district court for partition of the property belonging to her father, Sam Rollins, deceased. It was an amicable suit and the partition was made, as far is known, to the satisfaction of all parties concerned.

What caused the difficulty today is not known, but it is probably the result of the enmity which has long existed between the two men. It is said that Graves was drinking before the shooting took place. Blackshear is shot through the pit of the stomach and the wound will doubtless prove fatal. Graves was a member of several social organizations and carried life insurance. He has many friends in this county.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Nat Blackshear survived the shooting and died in 1910. He was married to Mamie (Rollins) Blackshear 1875-1902. They eloped at midnight 18 May 1893 and were married at 3 A.M. 19 May 1893 at the Presbyterian Church by minister Dr. Crozier, Palestine, Texas with Zula Quark as bridesmaid, and in Zula's clothing because her mother had locked her in her room and took her clothing. Mamie got out of her window in her night gown wrapped in the counterpayne.
