Francis Worth ABNEY1

M, b. 24 November 1849, d. 2 April 1918
Relationship
4th cousin 2 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Francis Worth ABNEY, son of Asbury Arnold ABNEY and Catherine Amanda McDade, was born on 24 November 1849 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana.1 He was also known as Frank.

Francis Worth ABNEY appeared on a census, enumerated 21 November 1850, in the household of his parents Asbury Arnold ABNEY and Catherine Amanda McDade in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. He was mistakenly listed as Frances W. Abney, female, age 7 months, born Louisiana.2

His father died on 4 November 1866 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, when Frank was 16.1,3 He graduated circa 1869 from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. For some years he was associated as partner with Colonel Morgan Jones, a well-known railroad man in the southwest, as railroad contractors.4

He was listed as a resident in a boarding house on a census report on 20 June 1870 in Railroad Township, Chicot County, Arkansas. Francis W. Abney was a 24 year old civil engineer, born Louisiana, and with personal estate valued $100. In the house there were four other civil engineers, ages 22-31, all with $100 personal estates. The 31 year old was from Russia. There was also a carpenter and four laborers. This would have likely involved work on the Mississippi, Ouachita & Red River Railroad.

Francis married first Catherine Venable Arnold in 1876 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia. Kate was the daughter of Enos Smith Arnold and Cynthia Noyes of Charleston.5 He and Kate Arnold appeared in a newspaper article 11 January 1876 in the The Wheeling Daily Register, published in Wheeling, West Virginia. "It may of interest to the many young gentlemen of this city who wasted their sweetness upon Miss Kate V. Arnold, of Charleston, during her visit here last month, to know that the young lady was married last Thursday to Capt. Frank W. Abney of Texas."

Frank moved from Louisiana and Texas to Charleston, West Virginia, circa 1878 as a construction engineer for the Potomac & Ohio Railroad which was beginning construction of tracks between Charleston and Elkins. However later that year the project failed due to the financial collapse of the company. As a result, Frank became associated in business with his father-in-law, Mr. Enos S. Arnold. In the following year they started a wholesale dry goods business under the name Arnold & Abney, which grew rapidly and soon commanded a prosperous trade.

In 1891 the long planned railroad again began construction under a new name and he was the first president of the Charleston, Clendenin & Sutton Railroad (later Coal & Coke Railroad) of West Virginia which he organized and earlier partly built.4

Francis appeared on a census, enumerated 17 June 1880, in the household of his father-in-law Enos S. Arnold in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia. Enos S. Arnold was a 60 year old dry goods merchant, born in Massachusetts; his sister Prudence Fowler, a 45 year old widow, keeping house, born Massachusetts; son-in-law Frank W. Abney, a 28 year old dry goods merchant, married, born in Louisiana; daughter Kate Abney, age 21, married, at home, born Virginia; grandddaughter Kate B. Abney, age 2, born West Virginia; Frank's sister Virginia B. Abney, age 21, at home, born Louisiana; Mary Thomas, a 50 year old black servant, widow; Tammy Thomas, a 19 year old black servant; Kate Thomas, an 11 year old black servant; and Frank Popp, a 19 year old white clerk in store, born in Pennsylvania. They lived at 271 Kanawha Road.6

In 1887 Mr. E. A. Barnes joined the firm and the name became Arnold, Abney & Company, and so continued until 1900 when William O. Abney, a cousin, and A. S. Thomas became associated with the business as junior partners and the name was changed to Abney, Barnes & Company. By this time the business had grown to where sales amounted to about $800,000 annually. In 1906 Frank retired from the business to become president of the Charleston-Kanawha Trust Company, of which he was the organizer. The company financed new enterprises, including coal, oil, gas, timber and land companies. He was regarded as one of the leading financiers of West Virginia.4

Francis Worth ABNEY and Kate Arnold appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 14 June 1900 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia. The household was listed as Frank W. Abney, a 54 year old dry goods merchant, born Nov 1845 in Louisiana; wife Kate A. Abney, age 45, born Jan 1855 in West Virginia(sic), mother of three children; daughter Katie B. Abney, age 21, born July 1878 in West Virginia; daughter Cynthia A. Abney, age 18, born July 1881 in West Virginia; daughter Mattie R. Abney, age 14, born Dec 1885 in West Virginia; father-in-law Enos S. Arnold, widowed 80 year old Capitalist, born May 1820 in Massachusetts; Katie Thomas, black servant, age 28, born Dec 1872 in Virginia and cousin William O. Abney, a single 37 year old clerk in dry goods store, born May 1863 in Virginia. They lived at 390 Kanawha Steet. Note there was an Albert Rand, a lumbeman, living next door and Frank's daughter Mattie's middle name was Rand. Connection unknown.7
