William J. "Billy" MATHEWS He was a well-known steamboat captain on the Tombigbee River as "Captain Billy". He was orphaned when quite young and lived for a time with his grandfather, Timothy W. Mathews, who became his guardian. He later went to live with his Aunt Sarah Sturges. He died in Mobile about 1871 or 1872. He never married. He was Steamboat Captain.

The latter boat having been docked and repaired, with class equal to any stern-wheeler on the river, and will be ready to resume her trips by 10th September, going each trip as far up the Warrior as the state of water will permit. In the 1870 Mobile City Directory William J. Mathews was listed as the First Clerk on the steamboat Reindeer. He lived on the northeast corner of Broad and Montgomery. In 1872 he was listed as a steamboat captain at the same address.
William left a will dated 5 February 1873 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama. He named Joseph R. Edwards executor. His lots in Mobile he asked to be sold and divided between Sarah B. Sturgis [sister] and Margaret Woods. Other gifts were left to Miss Millie Jenks, Miss Sarah Daniels, Miss Carrie Duncan, Andrew Abels, Florence Jemison, etc. No family relationships were mentioned, but these appear to be nieces and nephews.

The family moved into the Spanish colonial Woodward House when it was completed in 1924 and gave it to UAB in 1937 as the official residence of the UAB president. Born Feb. 13, 1909, Mrs. Lundbeck graduated from the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, VA., but never attended college, said her children. "Instead 18-year-old Anne and her sister Martha 'Martee' Woodward were given tickets for a cruise around the world in the 1920s by their uncle state Sen. Oscar Underwood," daughter Sandra Burt Arnold said. In 1931 Mrs. Lundbeck married James Marshall Burt Jr. of Opelika, a University of Alabama graduate. He died in 1960 in Baden Baden, Germany. They had two children: Arnold and son James Marshall "Bo" Burt III of Birmingham. Mrs. Lundbeck's second husband was Hilmer Lundbeck, chairman of Swedish American Shipping Lines. William Washington BURT, son of Zacheus BURT and Elizabeth BURT, was born on 11 October 1812 in Warren County, Georgia.1 He was a farmer.
He was probably one of the 2 males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Zacheus BURT, in the 1820 Federal Census of Capt Thomas Bustins District, Putnam County, Georgia. He lived first in Warren County, Georgia, later in Putnam County, and on 13 December 1830, he bought over 200 acres in the 17th District (formerly Muscogee County) from Thomas Mahone. Later he moved to Salem in Russell County (now Lee County), Alabama in 1835. He was a prosperous farmer and very active in the community; gave the land for the Methodist Church and cemetery. He was a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge.2
William married first Jane Ellizabeth LESEUR on 15 December 1839 in Salem, Russell (now Lee) County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Samuel LaSeuer of Salem.3,4
In 1836 Benjamin Meadors donated land in the Southwest quarter of section 33, township 20, range 28 (now Lee County), for the benefit of "Halawakee Academy." Sterling H. Pitts was born on 19 January 1815 in Georgia.2 He was also known as Mabray.3
Sterling married first Emily Elizabeth BURT, daughter of Zacheus BURT and Elizabeth BURT, on 1 December 1836 in Talbot County, Georgia. They had two children: Emily Fletcher and Ann Elizabeth.3,4
Sterling H. Pitts and Emily Elizabeth BURT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1 June 1850 in Russell County, Alabama. The household was listed as Sterlin(sp) Pitts, 35, male, farmer, $2,500, born Georgia; implied wife Emily Pitts, 32, female, born Georgia; along with implied daughters Ann Pitts, 8, female, born Alabama; and Emily, 5, female, born Alabama.5
Emily died on 28 August 1854 in Lee County, Alabama, at age 35 leaving Sterling as a widower. They had two daughters age 10 and under at the time.2
Sterling married second Sarah Ann Nelms on 22 August 1861 in Russell County, Alabama.6
Sterling H. Pitts was a witness to the will of William Washington BURT dated 24 June 1878 in Lee County, Alabama.7
Sterling left a will dated 29 May 1884 in Lee County, Alabama. His will was probated 8 July 1891 and provided $150 each to his grandchildren Sterling Pitts Wiggins, Annie F. Wiggins, and (Linnie?) Bell Wiggins. He divided the rest of his propety between his daughter, Emily Fletcher Marshall, and grandson, William H. Kimbrough. His executors were Samuel Marshall and William H. Kimbrough. The witness was H. S. Pitts.8

Daniel Grant OWEN

Daniel Grant OWEN was born on 18 May 1779 in Granville County, North Carolina.1 He was a farmer.
He moved to Wilkes County, Georgia when he was about twenty-eight years old and there met and married Sarah Willis in 1807. They moved in 1826 to the western frontier of Georgia to an area which became Talbot County in 1827.
Daniel married Sarah WILLIS in 1807 in Wilkes County, Georgia.
Daniel Grant OWEN died on 31 August 1860 in Talbot County, Georgia, at age 81.2,3 He was buried in Owen Cemetery, Woodland, Talbot County, Georgia.3
