Purchasers at the sale of the estate of Nicholas Smith on 23 May 1828 were Lewis Johnston, Joshua FLETCHER, Daniel Evans, John Baggett, Elizabeth Smith, William L. Adams, Reddie Lamb, Morrum Lamb, John GRAHAM, Richard Smith, Elxander GRAHAM, Edward Butler, William BUNDY, Nazareth Norton, John BUNDY, Johnas Caulder, Isom Scott, and Josiah BROWN.
Joshua married an unknown person , daughter of Moses PARKER and Nancy THOMAS, in Marlboro County, South Carolina. She was his second wife. His first wife was Nancy Smith, who died 9 Nov 1833.3

William began military service at age 18 on 13 May 1862 in Fort Gaines, Mobile, Alabama, and appeared on a muster roll June 12th at Camp Holt, near Mobile, in Company H 38th Alabama Infantry. Company H was from Wilcox county and was commanded by Capt. John A. Jackson. The company remained in the defense of Mobile until Feb 1863 when it was sent to Tullahoma, Tennessee and placed in Gen. Clayton's brigade. They first saw action at Hoover's Gap and half of the regiment were killed or wounded at Chicamauga. They lost heavily at Missionary Ridge, Resaca and Atlanta. Begiining at Jonesboro the brigade was commanded by Gen. Holtzclaw through the Battle of Nashville. After the retreat from Nashville they were returned to the defense of Mobile and suffered heavy losses at Spanish Fort. They surrendered with the army at Meridian, Mississippi, about 80 strong.1

James Marshall BURT Jr., son of James Marshall BURT and Florence BEDELL, was born on 29 September 1900 in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama.1 He was also known as Jim.
He traveled to Europe on 20 June 1924. He sailed from the port of New York on a trip to England, France, Germany and Italy aboard the Saxonia. According to his passport application the purpose of the trip was for travel and study. He was listed as a student living in Opelika. He was described as 22 years old, six foot two, high forehead, brown eyes, black hair, and dark complexion.1
James graduated in 1925 from the University of Alabama . He received a law degree and was student body president. In the school yearbook the following was written about him: "Jim represents the true Alabama spirit--- a Christian gentleman possessed of a democratic character. He leaves behind him a student body made happier by his administration as president, but a student body saddened by the irreparable loss of so prominant a student."
