Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. John filled out a draft card on 5 June 1917 in Beauregard, Louisiana. He was recorded as a 30-year-old telephone manager and lineman, employed by Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company. He was born 15 Aug 1886. He was married with one child and a resident of Gibsland, Louisiana. He was described as tall with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair.

John ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 5 April 1930 in Gibsland, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. The household was listed as John Abney, a 43-year-old manager of a telephone office, born Arkansas, and his wife, Mattie L., 42, born Louisiana. The lived at 11 Highway 80 west, owned their own home. The real estate was valued at $2000. They and married when John was 28. Their children were Mabel, 14 born Arkansas, and Mary, 8, born Louisiana.

John ABNEY appeared in a newspaper article 24 May 1934 in the Abilene Morning News, published in Abilene, Texas. He was interviewed in an article concerning the deaths of outlaws Bonne and Clyde the pervious day. Following is an excerpt from the article:
John Abney, a citizen of Gibsland, eight miles from the scene of the killings, told a graphic story of the transportation of the dead bodies to Arcadia in their "death Car."

"The officers brought the bodies through here about 11:30," he said. "They just left the bodies in the car and tied it to another car and hauled it to Arcadia. Bonnie Parker's head was almost shot off, and it just dangled. Barrow was as badly shot up. There must have been 15 or 20 bullet holes in the windshield of the car. The sides of the car were just peppered full of holes.

Several people here noticed Barrow's car in the last three or four days. It was an almost new car. It had an Arkansas license and a big trunk on the back.

The officers had been hiding along the road since 3 o'clock this morning and had automatic rifles, sawed-off shotguns and pistols. I heard an ex-convict had tipped them off that Barrow was coming this way.

The ex-convict went out in the road to flag the car and when Barrow reached for his own gun that's when the officers fired."

John ABNEY died on 31 October 1963 in Athens, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, at age 77. He was buried in Old Town Cemetery, Hayneville, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.2
