His obituary appeared 16 October 1909 in the Atlanta Georgian and News, published in Atlanta, Georgia. "Wealthy Planter Found Dead in Creek (Ellaville, Ga.)-- W. Z. Burt, a prominent citizen of Buena Vista, was found dead in Beaver Run, a small creek three miles from Ellaville, last night.
Mr. Burt had large farming interests in this county, and was on one of plantations yesterday settling with his tenants. After measuring some court, he told the tenant to take his coat home as he was going to the crossing at the branch. The negro took the coat home and as Mr. Burt did not return in his home, a search was instituted and his remains found in the creek.
The coroner is holding an inquest to determine whether it was foul play, suicide or accidental drowning.
Mr. Burt is the father of Cleve Burt of this county, and has several children and a wife."
