By her charming personality she became one of the social leaders of Charleston, and during her lifetime, before her recent illness, she held this position among her friends. In October, 1881, she was married to Mr. Payne, of Charleston, and to them were born three sons - Abney, James and Francis - who with a devoted husband, two sisters of Louisiana and one brother, Frank Abney, of Charleston, mourn her death.

Nearly twelve months ago Mrs. Payne was stricken with an insidious disease and after a month's careful nursing at home she was taken to the Johns Hopkins Sanitarium at Baltimore, where she bravely fought against the dread disease which was gradually bringing her nearer death's door. From the first physicians there claimed there was but little hope, and it was the one desire of Mrs. Payne to spend her last moments in her own home in Charleston surrounded by her relatives, and two months ago the doctors consented to her returning to her home, where she died.

James Monroe Payne was born on 21 May 1848 in Newport, Giles County, Virginia.1

James married Virginia Isabelle ABNEY, daughter of Asbury Arnold ABNEY and Louisa McDade, in October 1880.1

James Monroe Payne died on 12 November 1922 in Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland, at age 74.1

His obituary appeared 13 November 1922 in the The Charleston Daily Mail, published in Charleston, West Virginia.
The death last night at Takoma Park hospital, Washington, of James M Payne, removes one of Charleston's leading citizens and a member of one of the city's most influential families. Mr Payne had been in ill health for more than a year, but it was only within the last two months that his condition became serious.

Mr Payne was born May 21, 1848, at Newport, Giles county, Va, the son of Charles H and Rebecca Price Payne. After graduating from Roanoke college, he studied law and was admitted to the bar of Craig county, Va, in October, 1871. He practiced law there for about two years before coming to Charleston. His first law partner here was S S Green, with whom he remained until 1895. Later he became the senior partner in the firm of Payne, Minor and Bouchelle with whom he practiced law until two years ago, when he retired.

Mr Payne was married in October, 1880, to Miss Belle Abney, who died here in 1906. They had three sons, Arnold Abney, James Monroe and Francis Worth, the last named being killed in France in July, 1918, while he was serving as a lieutenant in the world war.

In 1908 Mr Payne was married to Miss Virginia Austin, of Lewisburg.

As an elder of the Presbyterian church, Mr Payne was active in religious work here. Although he never held a political office except as city councilman, he was a staunch supporter of the Democratic party. As a lawyer, he held memberships in the bar associations. He organized and was president of the Charleston home telephone company for some years.

He is survived by the widow, two sons, James M, Jr, and Abney Payne and several brothers and sisters among whom are C K Payne, Charleston; Frank Payne, Halstead; Edward Payne, Beckley; Mrs Laura Payne Lewis, Charleston and Mrs Easterfield, of Giles county, Va.

The two sons, who were with the father at the time of his death, will arrive here tomorrow with the body, which will be taken to the home at 1210 Virginia street. Funeral arrangements have not been made, it is announced.
