Cothran of Selma was hostess for her niece, Miss Flora Jane Abney, on her eleventh birthday, March 29. She carried them to the picture show and to the drug store where they were served ice cream and candy. Those from Maplesville attending were her mother, Mrs. W. H. Abney, Sadie Francis Mims, and Helem Nix. Flora Jane was the receprient of many beautiful gifts.

Flora-Jane was educated between 1932 and 1936 at Selma High School.

Flora-Jane ABNEY appeared in a newspaper article 21 March 1940 in the The Union Banner, published in Clanton, Alabama. "Montevallo, Ala. -- When the senior class at Alabama College drew lots last week, Miss Flora Jane Abney of Maplesville was among the lucky group who drew numbers assigning them rooms in the new and modernistic Julia Tutwiller Hall which P. W. A. officials have turned to the College early this month." Flora-Jane graduated from Alabama College in Montevallo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was active in the Speech Chorus, French Club, International Relations Club, and May Day committee. She started as a freshman in 1937.. After college she taught high school before her children were born and later in Ankara, Turkey and in Dallas, Texas. While in Dallas she earned a masters degree from Southern Methodiist University.3,4

Flora-Jane married George William Hintgen on 25 July 1942 at the Abney Place in Chilton County, Alabama.1

Flora-Jane ABNEY appeared in a newspaper article 20 December 1946 in the Alabamian, published in Alabama College / Montevallo, Alabama. "Alumnotes -- Flora Jane Abney Hintgen '40 is in Eutaw at present time. Her husband is a captain in the Army and moves very often, therefore this is a temporary address." (pg. 4.)

Flora-Jane ABNEY died on 30 September 1990 in Georgetown, Texas, at age 71.1

George William Hintgen

M, b. 24 September 1915, d. February 2004
     George William Hintgen was born on 24 September 1915.1 He graduated from both Texas A & I and the University of Texas with civil engineering degrees. After graduate work in Michigan, he entered the U. S. Public Health Service, serving during WWII in Alabama. Later, on leave to the State Department for the Marshall Plan, he served in Turkey from 1950 to 1953 on a special maleria control project, then in Baghdad, Iraq from 1954 to 1958 as consultant to the Ministry of Health. He retired from the City of Dallas Health Department in 1983 after serving as head of their environmental sanitation department for 25 years. In 1985 he and his wife moved to Georgetown, Texas to be nearer to some of their daughters.1

George married Flora-Jane ABNEY, daughter of William Hamilton ABNEY and Flora Helen Whitby, on 25 July 1942 at the Abney Place in Chilton County, Alabama.1

George William Hintgen died in February 2004 at age 88.
