Thomas Hamilton ABNEY II1

M, b. 14 July 1845, d. 23 December 1852
Relationship
1st cousin 2 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Thomas Hamilton ABNEY II, son of Alexander Hamilton ABNEY and Rachel Gaster, was born on 14 July 1845 in Louisiana.2 His mother, Rachel, died either in childbirth or soon afterward, sometime before 1850. My cousin, Abney H. Brewer, related the following: "From a story my grandfather, William Hamilton Abney, told his cousin's son, Zach Abney of Prattville, Alexander brought the baby back to Alabama to be cared for by his sisters. He bought a bolt of cloth and put it on the back of his saddle. Riding his horse back home to Alabama, whenever the baby needed changing, he cut off a bit of the cloth. He later returned for his son."2

Thomas Hamilton ABNEY II appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1850, in the household of his father Alexander Hamilton ABNEY in Upshur District, Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. He was listed as T. H. Abney, 5 year old male, born Georgia.3,1

Thomas Hamilton ABNEY II died on 23 December 1852 in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas, at age 7.4 Abney H. Brewer, related the following: "Alexander was in the Pittsburg (Upshur Co., now Camp Co.) Census in 1860 where he and our great-grandfather were in business together. But in 1854 and 1856 he was in Gilmer so I think it likely the little boy [Thomas H. Abney] was buried somewhere around Gilmer.2

I think the boy Thomas died in Texas at the home of his father and step-mother when his half-brother was only four months old. I imagine he was buried in Upshur County, Texas. Alexander was in the Pittsburg(Upshur Co., now Camp Co.) Census in 1860 where he and our great-grandfather were in business together. But in 1854 and 1856 he was in Gilmer so I think it likely the little boy was buried somewhere around Gilmer.
