Joseph began military service on 19 August 1861 in Wake County, North Carolina, where he enlisted as a private in company D, 26th North Carolina Infantry, CSA. He was 24 years old. He was killed in action 1 Jul 1863 during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. In that battlle they served in Pettigrew’s Brigade, Heth’s Division, Hill’s Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.

The 26th North Carolina was commanded at Gettysburg by Colonel Henry K. Burgwyn, Jr. He was killed on July 1st and Captain H.C. Albright took command. The 26th brought 800 men to the field. Five hundred eighty-eight men became casualties during the fighting on July 1st in a brutal battle of mutual annihilation with the 24th Michigan Infantry. The colors were shot down fourteen times. Company E was left with twelve men, all but two lightly wounded, and Company F consisted of a single sergeant, Robert Hudspeth.

During the charge on July 3rd 99 more men were lost. Eight more color bearers were killed or wounded. Sergeant Hudspeth had managed to scrape together a handful of detached men from Company F. They all became casualties.

A dispute has raged ever since between partisans of North Carolina and Virginia over who went farthest on July 3rd. There will probably never be an answer, if one is really needed. But one fact is without question – no regiment on either side at Gettysburg suffered more casualties than the 26th North Carolina.²

William began military service on 29 May 1861 in Wake County, North Carolina, where he enlisted as a private in company D, 26th North Carolina Infantry, CSA. His cousin, William or Wiley Patrick Burt, enlisted in the same company. He was wounded 14 Mar 1862 at New Bern, North Carolina. He was captured 1 Jul 1863, the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was held prisoner at David's Island, New York Harbor; paroled a 24 Aug 1863 at David's Island, New York Harbor; and received at City Point, Virginia for exchange 1 Jul 1864.

He was wounded by a gunshot to the shoulder 3 Jun 1864 at Richmond, Virginia. He was captured once again 2 Apr 1865 during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released 24 Jun 1865 on Oath of Allegiance at end of war.⁴

William Paschal BURT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 15 June 1870 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. The household was listed as Paschall Burt, a 27 year old grocer, with personal property valued $1500. Also in the household were James Pool, a 15 year old clerk in store and Lewis Washington, a 50 year old black shoemaker. All were born in North Carolina.⁵

William moved from Wake County, North Carolina to Dodge County, Georgia, between 1870 and 1880 during a lumber industry boom and the arrival of the the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. Dodge County was organized on October 26, 1870, a large portion of the county was taken from Laurens County, and also smaller portions from Pulaski, Montgomery, and Telfair counties.⁶

William married first Mary Jane Harrell on 11 December 1879 in Dodge County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Willis Paul Harrell, Sr. and Sophia Hendley. They had two daughters, Edna Earle Burt, born 1880, and Willie Mae Burt, born 1884.⁷

Burt, a 32 year old merchant, born in North Carolina and his 20 year old wife, Mary J, Burt, born Georgia. In the same household was a second merchant, perhaps a business partner, Wm. Sanders, 30, his wife, Elvinia Sanders, 30, and their five children.

Mary died on 14 October 1886 in Chauncey, Dodge County, Georgia, at age 26 She died of typhus leaving William Paschal BURT as a widower.⁷

William married second Nancy S. Harrell circa 1887 in Dodge County, Georgia. She was Mary Jane's double first cousin, the daughter of John Austin Harrell and Jeanette Jane Hendley.⁸

William Paschal BURT died before 1890 in Dodge County, Georgia. He died of peritinitus, and his two daughters were raised by their maternal uncle and his wife. The information of W P's family was passed on to Lynne Broome by her aunt (his granddaughter). She said that he died the year after his second marriage.

     Amanda BURT, daughter of Jesse BURT and Nancy Amanda Olive, was born on 28 September 1846 in Holly Springs, Wake County, North Carolina.¹ She was also known as Manda.

She was listed as Manley Burt, a male age 15. I believe this was an error by the census taker. I believe he misunderstood Amanda's nickname Mandy.³
