Mary Welder
F, b. 27 May 1861, d. 22 September 1905
Mary Welder was born on 27 May 1861 in Homes Mills, San Patricio County, Texas.1
Mary married Dr. Olin Light ABNEY, son of Zachariah Taylor ABNEY and Elizabeth Susan McClure, on 19 December 1889 in Victoria, Victoria County, Texas. Her fatherJohn James Welder was born in Germany.2
Mary Welder and Dr. Olin Light ABNEY appeared in a newspaper article 26 October 1895 in the Victoria Advocate, published in Victoria, Texas. "A very pleasant euchre party was given Wednesday evening, at the residence of Mrs. D. Welder, in honor of Mrs. O. L. Abney, of Fort Worth, who is on a visit to Victoria, her former home. The occasion was one of enjoyment, and will long be remembered by the ladies present."3
Mary Welder and Dr. Olin Light ABNEY were divorced circa 1899 in Texas. In the 1900 census Mary Abney is living in Victoria with her sister Agnes and husband James H. Fleming and shown as divorced. It indicated that she had been married only one year. In later census records she is listed as Mary Welder.
This may may be the explanation for Dr. Abney's surprising move to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in late 1899. According to Wikepedia: "Beginning in the 1880s, a 90-day residency law and lax oversight on the part of local judges concerning sworn testimony caused word to spread across the United States that a legal divorce was easily obtained in Dakota Territory. As a result, both Sioux Falls and Fargo (in later North Dakota) became known as "divorce capitals". Thousands of people traveled to the towns seeking a divorce, with the resulting divorce rate in Minnehaha County during this period being nearly three times that of the national average... Divorce laws were tightened after statehood, and the phenomenon had ended by the early 1900s."4,1,5
Mary Welder died on 22 September 1905 in Victoria, Victoria County, Texas, at age 44.6 She was buried in Catholic Cemetery #1, Victoria, Victoria County, Texas.4
Her obituary appeared 25 September 1905 in the The Galveston Daily News, published in Galveston, Texas. "Victoria, Tex., Sept. 24 -- Miss Mary Welder, aged 44 years, died at the Welder home in this city Friday about noon after a brief illness.
She just recently returned from a visit to Mexico, since which time she had been suffering with malaria, followed by two congestive chills, resulting in her death yesterday. Her death came unexpectedly and was a shock to her many friends. The deceased was a sister to Messrs. John J. and James F., Frank A. and Misses Lizzie and Lina Welder and Mesdames E. L. Dunlap and J. H. Fleming, all of this city except Miss Lizzie, who resides in California. She was a grandchild of the noted James Power of the Power & Howitson colony of which Texas history tells us.
She was a charter member of the local branch of the Daughters of the Republic and its president at the time of her death and its historian for several years.
She was a member of the Bronte Literary Club and always took a prominent part in the religious work of the Catholic Church of this city.
Her remains were laid to rest Saturday afternoon from St. Mary's Catholic Church."

Rosanna KENNEDY
F, b. circa 1790, d. before 18 October 1823
- Relationship
- 3rd great-grandaunt of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Rosanna KENNEDY, daughter of Alexander KENNEDY and Jane (?), was born circa 1790 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The only time that she is mentioned is in the 1810 deed included below. Rosanna is not mentioned in their mother Jane Kennedy's 1823 will so perhaps she was dead by then.
Rosanna KENNEDY was mentioned in the deed of John ABNEY and Zachariah ABNEY on 29 December 1810 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina. According to the bond, William Kennedy, now of Georgia, had sold land where he formerly lived on Tosetys Creek, a branch of the Saluda River. It not being convenient for him to procure rights from some of the legatees of his father's estate, including his brothers John and James Kennedy and his sister Rosanna Kennedy, Zachariah paid $200 bond to indemnify John Abney against claims of the legatees should they come forward.1,2
Rosanna KENNEDY died before 18 October 1823.
