Cora E. Marsh

F, b. 12 February 1884, d. 18 June 1963
Cora E. Marsh was born on 12 February 1884 in Bowling Green, Pike County, Missouri. She was the daughter of John Wesley Marsh (1846-1932) who was born in Indiana and died in Phoenix, Arizona, and Mary Jane Inge (1851-1821), born in Indiana and died in St. Louis.1

Cora E. Marsh appeared on a census, enumerated 6 June 1900, in the household of her parents John Wesley Marsh and Mary Jane Inge in Buffalo Township, Pike County, Missouri. The household was listed as: John W. Marsh, a 53 year old farmer and Mary J. Marsh, his 48 year old wife, both born in Indiana, he in Mar 1847 and her in Jun 1851. Also in the household were their children, all born in Missouri and all in school: Cora A. Marsh, age 16, born Feb 1884; Sarah J. Marsh, age 14, born May 1886; Raymond Marsh, age 12, born May 1888; and George W. Marsh, age 8, born Oct 1892.

She appeared in a newspaper article 20 September 1900 in the The Bowling Green Times, published in Bowling Green, Missouri. Her father, John Marsh, went to Oklahoma in October 1900, came back to Missouri, put everything up for sale except his 94 acre farm which he rented out. He had the sale on Sept. 29, and packed up the family and moved to Oklahoma.

Lawton was a “tent town” in 1900. It was opened to settlement through an auction of town lots beginning on 6 August 1901, which was completed 60 days later. By 25 September 1901, the Rock Island Railroad expanded to Lawton and was soon joined by the Frisco Line. It became the county seat of Comanche county after statehood in 1907.

The 2 Jul 1903 The Bowling Green Times mentions Cora's parentss in Chattanooga, Oklahoma. "The many friends of Mr. Thomas Frank Summers will be grieved to learn of his death which occurred June 18th, 1903 at the home of his wife’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. John Marsh near Chattanooga, Okla., at the age of 41 years. He was born in Pike Co., Mo.. In 1862 joined the Baptist church t the age of 17 . . . He was married to Miss Louvergia Marsh. Dec. 9, 1895 at Louisiana, MO. Mr. Summers had but recently moved to Okla. in hopes of regaining his health. . . . He leaves a wife, a little son six years old of age and a daughter three."2

She appeared in a newspaper article 31 May 1901 in the Kansis City Journal, published in Kansis City, Missouri. In the bottom of a strawberry box opened at Hutchinson (Kansas) the othe day, this was found written: "I am Cora Marsh, aged 16, of Logan, Mo. and Never been kissed."

Cora married Dr. Olin Light ABNEY, son of Zachariah Taylor ABNEY and Elizabeth Susan McClure, on 1 November 1901 in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma Territory. The service took place at the parsonage of the Church of Christ and was performed by A. B. Carpenter, minister of the Gospel. Witnesses were F. E. Quarles and Mrs. Emma F. Carpenter. The groom was listed at 42 years old and born in South Carolina and the bride was 18 and born in Illinois. Note: Oklahoma did not become a state until 16 Nov 1907.3

Dr. Olin Light ABNEY and Cora E. Marsh sold a tract of land to B. K. Morriss on 21 August 1903 in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma Territory. Dr. O. L. Abney and Cora Abney, his wife. for $200 sold lots 5, 6 and 7 of block 2 of the Beal addition in Lawton.

She appeared in a newspaper article 19 November 1903 in the The Bowling Green Times, published in Bowling Green, Missouri. "Mrs. Dr. Abney formerly Cora Marsh and sister Sadie, are up from Lawton, Oklahoma, visiting their sisters, Mrs. Dale Darnell, of Bowling Green and Mrs. Thomas Cavendar of Illinois." This shows that Cora's sister Sadie (Sarah??) was with her in Lawton.4

Cora E. Marsh and Dr. Olin Light ABNEY were divorced in March 1904 in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma. From the 10 Mar1904 issue of the Lawton News-Republican (Lawton, OK): “Lew Martin has been attending court the past week. He is a witness in the Abney divorce case.”

In a deed dated 10 Jun 1905 in Lawton "O. L. Abney (single man)" sold lot 28 in block 51 for $250 to T. S. Hatton. This would seem to indicate that he and Cora were no longer married. The marriage might have been annulled as Cora was only 17 when they married. The legal age for men was 21 and for women it was 18.5

Cora and Glen Marsh ABNEY appeared in a newspaper article 22 June 1904 in the The Daily Republican, published in Lawton, Oklahoma. "Mrs. Dr. Abney and son of Lawton are visiting at the home of her father, John Marsh.”.

Cora married second John Scheer on 4 January 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri. She married as Cora E. Marsh. The marriage did not last as he married Alice Kendall 30 Jan 1918.6

Cora E. Marsh and John Scheer appeared on a census enumerated 26 April 1910 in Buffalo Township, Pike County, Missouri. The household was listed as John Scheer and his wife Cora E. Scheer were living with his mother Sarah Scheer, age 53, and two of his brothers, William H. and Franklin Scheer. John was a 31 years old farmer born n Missouri and his wife Cora E. Scheer - daughter-in-law - was age 21 born Missouri, her father and mother were born in Indiana. They had been married 4 years and there were no children.

She appeared in a newspaper article 2 July 1915 in the The Twice-A-Week Times, published in Louisiana City, Missouri. This article was about Mrs. M. J. Marsh, Cora's mother, who lived near Mt. Zion Church in Pike county, Missouri. She was surprised on 27 Jun 1915 with a birthday party and fish fry given by her four children, eight grandchildren, and neighbors. Daughters named were Mrs. Q. B. Haught, Mrs. Thomas Cavander, Mrs. John Scheer (Cora) and Mrs. Sadie Watters (Sarah).4

Cora E. Marsh and John Scheer were divorced on 3 September 1917 in Louisiana City, Pike County, Missouri. The 9 Aug 1917 issue of The Bowling Green Times of Bowling Green, Missouri said: "Robert A. May filed a divorce suit in the Louisiana court for the September term of John Scheer of near Cyrene who asks for divorce from his wife, Cora E. Scheer. On the other hand Mrs. Scheer, through her attorneys, Pearson & Pearson, has filed a cross bill and also brought suit against her husband's mother, Sarah Ann Scheer and his brother, W. H. Sheer for $10,000 for alienating her husband's affections."

The 7 Sep 1917 issue of The Twice-A-Week Times of Louisiana City, Pike county, Missouri said "the common pleas court convened Monday (Sep 3) in the Masonic Temple with Judge Woolfolk on the bench . . ." Motions were made for the lawsuits of "John Scheer vs Cora Scheer, divorce, defendant's motion for maintenance, suit money, fees, etc." and "Cora Scheer vs Sarah Ann Scheer and W. H. Scheer, motion of defendant for security for costs... The Scheer divorce case was next called before Judge Woolfolk... There were a number of witnesses present for the Scheer case and it is thought that it will take the rest of the week to try it, but it was compromised after the statement had been made." The suit of Cora E. Scheer vs. Sarah Ann Scheer, et al, damages, was continued. Basically John and Cora came to some sort of settlement agreement or compromise to avoid the embarrassment of a public trial.

There was nothing more found concerning the second lawsuit, so most likely it was also settled out of court. However, It does appear that Cora came off pretty well as the 5 Feb1918 The Twice-A-Week Times (Louisiana, MO) said that Cora E. Scheer bough a new Ford touring car from John Cornish and Sons. There are several mentions of her and her car visiting and such.4,7

She appeared in a newspaper article 14 July 1918 in the The Twice-A-Week Times, published in Louisiana City, Missouri. "Mrs. John Sheer (Cora) and mother, Mrs. M. J. Marsh have rented the Buckberg house formerly occupied by Miss Susie Love." This would have been in Louisiana City, Pike county.

The same source 21 Mar 1919 reported that Cora's mother moved to New Mexico to live with her son George. Daughters Sadie Watters and Alice Goodwin (daughter, I think) accompanied her.

Cora operated the place as a boarding house as the same source reported 20 Apr 1919 that Chester Houchins and Miss Cuma Tilly were getting married at Mrs. Cora Scheer's boarding house. The article also mentions that "Mrs. Cora Scheer and Mr. Anderson [Andrew] Sogol stood up for the couple."

Then from the same source on 16 Sep 1919, Advertisement: “Change of Management — Having rented my boarding house to Mrs. O. B. Haught, I have retired and she will continue the business and will also serve meals regularly. Mrs. Cora Scheer." This is her sister, and the husband actually went by Peter, I think.8,7

Cora married third Andrew Sogol on 8 November 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri. She married as Mrs. Cora E. Scheer of Louisiana City, Missouri.

From the 10 Nov 1919, The Bowling Green Times (Bowling Green, MO): Sogol — Scheer. There was an article about Cora and Andrew’s elopement. They went to St. Louis and came home on Monday but didn’t tell anybody about the marriage until the following Friday. They had announced the engagement but nobody knew about the marriage. The article also says that Mr. Sogol “is a government inspector and has been in Louisiana since March. His home is St. Louis. Mrs. Sogol returned two weeks ago from Twin Falls, Idaho, Salt Lake City and Denver, where she has been visiting for the last two months. They will leave here in December for Southern California to spent the winter. They both have made many friends here who are sorry to see them leave. We extend best wishes to the happy couple.”.9,7

Cora E. Marsh and Andrew Sogol appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 16 January 1920 in Buffalo township, Louisiana City, Pike County, Missouri. The household was listed as Andrew Sogol, a 42 year old engineering inspector with the government, born Missouri, and his wife, Cora Sogol, a 35 year old lodging house keeper, also born in Missouri. They lived at 115 4th Street. Others in the household were lodger Obed Hall, a 27 year old vulcanizer of tires, born Missouri; lodger John Henry Walter, another 27 year old vulcanizer of tires, born Missouri; Cora's niece Ruth Haught, a 15 year old office worker in a nursery, born in North Dakota; lodger William C. Rose, a 57 year old laborer in a livery barn, born Missouri; and lodger John Hubby, a 57 year old section worker on railroad, born in Bohemia. He had immigrated in 1898 and was naturalized in 1904.

When Cora’s mother Mrs. M. J. Marsh died on 11 Sep 1921, her death certificate indicated that she was living with Cora and Andrew at the time. She had, however, been living with "her granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. Carr" in 1919.

Andrew died on 19 January 1923 in Fort Stanton, Lincoln County, New Mexico, at age 45 leaving Cora E. Marsh as a widow.10

Cora married fourth Frederick William Pfeiffer on 1 November 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri. She married as Mrs. Cora E. Sogol.11

Cora E. Marsh and Frederick William Pfeiffer appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 21 April 1930 in Central, St. Louis County, Missouri. The household was listed as Fred Pfeiffer, a 45 year old clerk in a dry goods store and his wife, Cora Pfeiffer, age 45, both born in Missouri. Both of her parents were born in Indiana. They married at age 37, so about 1922. They lived at 3326 Edmondson Road.

Cora E. Marsh and Frederick William Pfeiffer appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 26 April 1940 in Normandy, St. Louis County, Missouri. The household was listed as Fred Pfeiffer, a 55 year old laborer with the city street department, and his wife Cora Pfeiffer, was a 56 year old sewing machine operator, both born in Missouri. They had 8th grade educations. Fred owned their home which was valued $3000, that is $57,225 in today's dollars. They lived at 3318 Calvert street. They had lived at the same location in 1935. Note: Normandy and Overland were adjoining neighborhoods in St. Louis.

Cora E. Marsh and Frederick William Pfeiffer were listed in the 1943 city directory for St. Louis, Missouri. Fredk W. (Cora E.) Pfeiffer, elevator operator, home 3321 Edmondson Rd., Overland neighborhood.

As of 1946, Cora E. Marsh and Frederick William Pfeiffer were living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. They appeared there on a voter registration list and were living at 1558 Brockton Avenue. They were listed as Fred W. and Cora E. Pfeiffer.

Frederick died on 30 March 1949 in Los Angeles, California, at age 63 leaving Cora E. Marsh as a widow.12

Cora E. Marsh appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 6 April 1950 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. The household was listed as Cora Pheiffer, a 66 year old widow, born in Missouri. She had two boarders, Vedrone Andley, a 22 year old white male born Mississippi, looking for work, and Arthur Riley, a 23 year old white male, born in Arkansas, an assembly worker in an aircraft plant. She lived at 1333 Federal Avenue. She was listed at that same address in 1950, 1952 and 1960 voter registration records.

Cora E. Marsh died on 18 June 1963 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 79. Her death certificate lists her father as John Wesley Marsh and her mother was Mary Jane Inge, both born in Indiana. The informant was her niece Laura Belle Summers (1899-1988), daughter of her sister, Lula Marsh Stonehouse.1 She was buried in Greenwood Memory Lawn, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Greenwood Memorial Park was established in 1906 by Arizona Lodge #2 of the Free and Accepted Masons. In 1947, Memory Lawn Memorial Park was established as a separate cemetery to the west of the existing Greenwood. These two cemeteries were combined in 1989 which created the largest cemetery in Arizona. Still active, there are well over 100,000 souls interred at the combined facility.13

Andrew married Cora E. Marsh on 8 November 1919 in St.

We extend best wishes to the happy couple.”.2,3

When Cora’s mother Mrs. M. J. Marsh died on 11 Sep 1921, her death certificate indicated that she was living with Cora and Andrew at the time. She had, however, been living with "her granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. Carr" in 1919.

1st cousin 4 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Catherine Mildred Thompson, daughter of William Mills Thompson and Mildred Thornton BALL, was born on 9 August 1822 in Culpeper County, Virginia.1 She was also known as Kitty.

From part of a letter written by Kitty Littleton to Anna Burt Buckner 20 Sep 188_. It was written from Bloomfield, Loudoun county, Virginia: "My cousin Isabella has left this space in which she wishes me to write a few lines. I have often heared(sp) my mother (Mildred Thornton Ball) speak of your grandmother, Patsy Ball (Martha Dandridge Ball) as she was called, a nick name, who married Col. Gibson and lived at Culpeper C. H. at that time. My father and mother were married and it was there they met when on a visit to Aunt Patsy. My father was Wm. M. Thompson, who was a merchant there at the time, left Culpeper C. H. when I was very young, consequently I lost sight of my relatives there as Uncle Catlett lost his wife young and married again. There are very few of us left. I am the only one of my mother's three children living, Isabella and Ebenezer all of Uncle Charles', and Washington Ball, now living in Fauquier the only child of Uncle Fayette. The two above named, Uncle Charles, your grandmother and my mother, were all great nieces and nephews of George Washington. I have the portraits of his brother Charles Washington and his wife now in my possession. I am very glad to hear from you, for I know so very few of my mother's family. I will be pleased to hear from you any time." It was signed "Yours affectionately, C. M. Littleton."

Catherine "Kitty" Mildred (Thompson) Littleton (1822-1901) was the daughter of Mildred Thornton Ball. Isabella Ball (1819-1897) was the daughter of Dr. Charles Burgess Ball.
