John Bay ABNEY Sr., son of Paul ABNEY and Eleanor HAMILTON, was born on 20 March 1776 in South Carolina.1,2 He was also known as Jonathan. He was a merchant and a bit of a jack of all trades. His probate records show a long list of people who owed for his work between October 1818 and August 1, 1822. Many of these people owed John Abney for fixing a watch or for fixing a cotton machine, a gun, smithwork, repairing a wagon or for cotton bagging. Others owed for a gallon of brandy and such.

He was probably the male age 16 to 25 listed in the household of his father, Paul ABNEY, in the 1800 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina.

During the War of 1812, Joel P. ABNEY, Azariah ABNEY and John Bay ABNEY Sr. enlisted in in Capt. Zachary Smith Brooks' Company of state cavalry between 1800 and 1815 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Joel was a cornet. There were three John Abneys in the unit, one was first sergeant and another was secretary.3

John married first Martha "Patsy" WILLS, daughter of Matthew WILLS and Martha ABNEY, on 6 March 1800 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.4,5,6

John Bay ABNEY Sr. sold a tract of land to William Yarbrough of Abbeville District on 13 January 1806 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. For 50 pounds he sold the land whereon Polly Abney, widow of Samuel Abney [Jr] deceased, now resides, bounded on the south by land whereon James Carson now lives, north and northwest by land whereon Mary Bladon reside and land of James Hill, John Coleman, and Nathaniel Abney, northeast by Azariah Abney, southeast by Jesse Sanfords land. Witnesses John Bolger and John Carson. Signed John Abney. Proven 13 Jan 1806 by John Carson and Nathaniel Abny JP. Recorded 25 Mar 1806.7

Martha died on 20 October 1817 in South Carolina at age 32 leaving John Bay ABNEY Sr. as a widower.1,2

Jonathan married second Agatha GRIFFITH, daughter of Joseph GRIFFITH and Mary Ann Boulware, on 25 January 1819 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Joseph Griffith and Mary Ann Boulware. They were of Welsh decent.1,5,6

He was named executor and an heir in the will of Paul ABNEY dated 24 October 1819 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina. I give to my son John Abney five negroes namely: Juda, Sarah, Mary, Ben and Sam. He is to pay his sisters 100 dollars each in twelve months after receiving the negroes.8

On 2 October 1823 John Bay died in Edgefield County, South Carolina, at age 47 leaving Agatha a widow. "I do hereby certify, that I do not wish to administer, nor have any hand in the administration of the Estate of my husband, John Abney Jun'r Dec'd." Signed Agatha Abney. Note: This says John Abney, Junior, but should be Senior.9,10

16 May 1825: From Edgefield.Court Records 1800-1870 (#008617805); LDS Image 191 of 676: In Equity #273: John Chapman & Wife and Wm. Griffin [sic] & wife vs. Ellen Abny [sic] & others - Bill for Partition. John Chapman and wife Sophia and William Griffin [sic] and wife Polly say that their mother Martha Abney at the time of her marriage to John Abney owned a valuable tract of land on the Saluda River in the Edgefield District. It contained about three hundred acres and had been inherited from her father Matthew Wills. At the distribution of Matthew Wills estate, the land was worth $400.00. [Note: The writing is very difficult to read.]

In order to make distribution equal, Martha's husband John Abney paid over to other heirs. He had acquired an interest in the land. Martha, their mother, died in 1817 leaving a husband John Abney and seven children, to wit "Sophia (now the wife of Jno Chapman), Polly wife of ? ? ? of Wm Griffin, Nancy Abney, Wm, Ellen, Matthew & Daniel, entitled to distributive shares of said tract of land." Since the death of Martha, "two of her children have daparted this life under the age of twenty one, to wit Nancy and William."

The orators further show that John Abney married Agatha Griffin [sic] and has had two children - Joseph and John, who are both under twenty-one. Their father John Abney died in 1823 and owned a tract of land on the Saluda River that contined about 160 acres and entitled to one third of the land that had Martha had inherited with an interest of $400 which he had advanced in connection with Matthew Wills' estate.

Persons entitled to distributive shares of the estate are John Chapman and wife Sophia; William Griffin [sic] and wife Polly; Ellen, about 15 years old; Matthew and Daniel, children by his former wife, and Agatha Abney, his widow, and two children, to wit Joseph and John by his last wife. They believe it is to the best interest of all that the land be divided.

On May 18, 1825, Matthew W. Coleman, Joseph Griffin, and David Martin, the Commissioners who examined the two tracts of land agree that the land cannot be divided equally and that a sale of the land would be best for all. They recommend the land be sold on a credit of two years.

On August 1, 1825, The land is ordered to be sold by Whitfield Brooks. The sale will be at Capt. Sampson Pope's store on Friday, September 3 next. There will be two adjoining tracts of land on the Saluda River -- one contining about 300 acres and the other about 150 acres.

Jonathan ABNEY was mentioned in the obituary of John Nathan CHAPMAN on 3 August 1854 in the The Edgefield Advertiser. It menitoned that Chapman, "He learned his trade from his father-in-law, John Abney, Esq.12 "
