Their children were all born in Alabama: William L., 25; Susan, 17; Zachariah A., 15; Frances T., 12; Robert M., 9; and Ella A., 5. Living next door was James' mother, Martha.

She appeared in a newspaper article 19 August 1887 in the The San Saba News and Star, published in San Saba, Texas. Mr. J. H. Brown and wife are rejoicing over the arrival at their house recently of an appreciated new addition to the family. This we are informed is Mr, Brown's 18th child which has been born under the roof where he now lives. Congratulations are yet n order.
