He was recorded as Jas. A. Cottingham, age 10 (1850), attending school, born Hempstead county, Arkansas.1

James Poindexter COTTINGHAM appeared on a census, enumerated 21 August 1870, in the household of his parents Rev. Gideon Wesley COTTINGHAM and Mary Elizabeth Thomas in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas. He was listed as James P. Cottingham, age 19, at home, born Arkansas.

James married Lura Ann Pipkin on 7 January 1874 in Rockport, Aransas County, Texas.

James Poindexter COTTINGHAM and Lura Ann Pipkin moved from El Paso to Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas, 1883 along with their children. They traveled by covered wagon and arrived in Brownsville 2 Dec 1883 after a journey of two months and seven days.

James Poindexter COTTINGHAM died on 14 October 1927 in Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas, at age 77. His residence was Brownsville, but he was in Mission staying with his son for care during his illness. His wife had died two years earlier.2 He was buried in Buena Vista Burial Park, Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas.

His obituary appeared 15 October 1927 in the The Brownsville Herald, published in Brownsville, Texas.
"Funeral services for James P. Cottingham, Sr., pioneer resident of this section, were held in the Methodist church at Mission at 8 o'clock Saturday morning, and the body was buried here at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Mr. Cottingham died Friday morning at 6:35 o'clock at the home of his son, James P. Cottingham, Jr. in Mission."

The Masonic Lodge had charge of the services and funeral rites at Buena Vista cemetery.

"He is survived by another son, J. H. Cottingham, and two daughters, Mrs. D. G. Wood and Mrs. John R. Peavey, all of Mission. He also leaves seven grandchildren..."

"Mr. Cottingham was born in Hempstead, Ark., and came to Texas when a young man, settling in Colorado county. In 1874 he was married to Miss Lura Pipkin, at Rockport, Texas. He lived for many year in Houston and later moved to El Paso. While living there in 1880 he was one of the contractors that constructed the Mexican Central railroad into the interior of Mexico.

When the family moved to Brownsville the trip from El Paso was made in a wagon, more than three required to complete the journey.

After coming to Brownsville, Mr. Cottingham engaged in cattle raising for a number of years, and also did some contracting work.

In 1923 he retired he retired from active business and left his home to live with his two sons, both members of the Border Patrol in Mission. He had been in the United States custom service for a number of years, and was at one time a deputy sheriff here.

His wife died several years ago."

John appeared in a newspaper article 16 October 1887 in the Daily Arkansas Gazette, published in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Thomas-Cottingham Nuptials -- The Memphis Avalanche of Friday contained the following notice of the marriage of Mr. W. P. Thomas and Miss Charrie Cottingham of this city, mention of which was made in Friday's Gazette:

"Shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning, one of the pretty parlors at the Gayoso Hotel was the scene of a matromonial knottying by the Rev. Mr. Spencer of Ashbury church.

The principals in the affair were a Mr. William P. Thomas and Miss Charrie Cottingham, a beautiful blonde, with a form Jupiter would have raved about. The bridal party came from Little Rock, Ark., and consisted of the above named two, Mrs. M. E. Cottingham, Mr. J. Cottingham, mother and brother of the bride, and Mr. and Mrs. Ham O. Williams.

Mr. Williams acted as best man and Mr. J. Cottingham gave the bride away. She was dressed in a very pretty brown silk traveling dress, trimmed with jet, while her wealth of silken tresses was tastefully decorated with roses.

After the bride and groom had promised to love, honor and obey, etc., the merry little party adjoined to another room and partook of a tempting breakfast which had been specially prepared for the occasion.

The room in which the ceremony took place is one which will be used as a parlor by the President (Grover Cleveland) when he arrives, and is considered as one of the prettiest in the hotel."

In this same issue was the following Personal: "Mr. John Cottingham, the efficient and accomodating deputy county clerk, has returned from Memphis, where he had gone to attend his sister's marriage, and is at his desk again."

John Harvey COTTINGHAM and James Pipkin COTTINGHAM were officers of the U. S. Border Patrol. Jack and Jim were among the 13 original members of the patrol. They patroled the Texas-Mexico border during the bandit trouble of the pre-World War days. You can read their story from the book: Migra!      Susie Wells COTTINGHAM, daughter of James Poindexter COTTINGHAM and Lura Ann Pipkin, was born on 22 May 1892 in Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas.1

Susie Wells COTTINGHAM died on 19 December 1977 in McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas, at age 85.1 She was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas.2

Her obituary appeared 20 December 1977 in the The Monitor, published in McAllen, Texas. Mrs. Susie Peavey, 85, a pioneer Valley resident and wife of well-known Valley lawman John R. Peavey died Monday at 1 p.m. at McAllen General Hospital following a lengthy illness.

A native of Brownsville, Mrs. Peavey had lived at numerous places in South Texas including Corpus Christi, Alice, Laredo, Hidalgo, and McAllen. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of McAllen and former member of McAllen Chapter 14, Order of the Eastern Star.

Mr. and Mrs. Peavey who had said they eloped in a horse-drawn buggy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last May 22.

Survivors in addition to her husband are one son, John R. Peavey, Jr. of Mission, one daughter, Mrs. Joe Geraci of New Orleans, La, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Kreidler Funeral Home with Rev. David Freeman of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.

Thomas Sumpter NORRIS was listed as a resident in the household of J. F. Crocheron in the census report on 3 October 1850 in River Beat, Dallas County, Alabama. Crocheron was a 52 year old farmer and Tom was one of seven apparent boarders. He was listed as Thomas Norris, an 18 year old clerk, born in Alabama. Tom began military service on 6 May 1862 in Bridgeport, Jackson County, Alabama, when he enlisted as a private in Co. C, 42nd Alabama Infantry along with his brother-in-laws, John and Thomas W. Burt. Tom was promoted to sergeant. The 42nd were part of the Army of Tennessee. Company C was made up mostly of men from Wlcox county and was organized in Apr 1862 in Columbus, Mississippi. At Corinth, of 700 men engaged, they lost 98 killed, 250 wounded or captured. At Vicksburg they had 10 killed and 50 wounded. At Resaca, Georgia they had 59 killed or wounded. They surrendered at Bentonville, North Carolina.2

He was mentioned in the obituary of Nelson Booker NORRIS on 7 November 1894 in the The Greenville Advocate. He was one of the four surviving sons: T. S. (Thomas) Norris, Richard (Julius) Norris, Dick (Pick?) Norris and Needham Norris.

His obituary appeared 20 July 1899 in the The Citizen-Examiner, published in Hayneville, Alabama. "One by one the death angel calls and this time it was the soul of Mr. T. S. Norris of Ft. Deposit, which answered last Sunday. We extend to the bereaved ones our sincerest sympathy."

     Julius Caesar NORRIS, son of Nelson Booker NORRIS and Martha Blalock, was born on 6 August 1830 in Richmond, Dallas County, Alabama.1 He was also known as Richard, so perhaps his full name was Richard Julius Caesar Norris.

He was probably one of the 2 males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, Nelson Booker NORRIS, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dallas County, Alabama.

He appeared on a census, enumerated 15 October 1850, in the household of his parents Nelson Booker NORRIS and Eliza Ann Adams in Warrenton, Dallas County, Alabama. He was enumerated as Richard Norris, a farmer, age 20, born in Alabama.

He appeared on a census, enumerated 4 August 1860, in the household of his father Nelson Booker NORRIS in Mount Willing, Lowndes County, Alabama. He was recorded as J. A. Norris, a 26 year old overseer, born Alabama.

Julius began military service at age 30 in March 1861 in Memphis, Tennessee, where he enlisted as a private in Company A, Wert Adam's regiment of Louisiana Cavalry. He was wounded at Shiloh and Alexandria, but served until the end of the war and was discharged in April 1865. He applied for and received a pension.

Julius married Georgiana B. Gardner on 24 January 1866 in Lowndes County, Alabama. The service was performed by A. M. Simmons, JP.2

Julius Caesar NORRIS appeared in a newspaper article 9 November 1881 in the The Citizen-Examiner, published in Hayneville, Alabama. Ft. Deposit -- Nearly three weeks since Mr. Richard Norris met with a misfortune so common during the ginning season. His right hand was terribly lacerated by the gin saws; so much so that Dr. Carr had to amputate the whole hand last week. Last reports show that he is getting along very well.

He was mentioned in the obituary of Nelson Booker NORRIS on 7 November 1894 in the The Greenville Advocate. He was one of the four surviving sons: T. S. (Thomas) Norris, Richard (Julius) Norris, Dick (Pick?) Norris and Needham Norris.

He filed for and received a Confederate pension in both Lowndes and Mobile counties. After his death, his wife Georgia continued to receive his pension. In 1898 from Lowndes he mentioned being wounded in 1863 in the breast at Denmark, Tennessee. He said he was wounded at Shiloh, Denmark and Alexandria. In 1896 from Lowndes he said he was 60 years old and since the war had lost his right hand. He said he was a resident of Fort Deposit and worked as a town night watchman. He said he had been wounded four times during the war. In 1907 from Lowndes he was still working as a night watchman and said his age was 69.

After his death, Georgia continued the applications and said that 1915-1919 she had lived in Mobile. She said that she was born 13 Aug 1841 in Mobile.

He appeared in a newspaper article 6 January 1899 in the Fort Deposit Vindicator, published in Fort Deposit, Alabama. J. C. Norris was listed as a member of both the Knights of Pythias and the local Masonic Lodge.

Julius Caesar NORRIS and Georgiana B. Gardner appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 7 June 1900 in Fort Deposit, Lowndes County, Alabama. The household was listed as Julius C. Norris, a 71 year old night watchman, born August 1838, and his 58 year old wife, Georgia, born August 1841. They had been married 34 years, and she was the mother of nine, six still living. Also in the household was son, Charles M. Norris, a 32 year old farmer, born in 1868; daughter Annie Norris, age 20, born July 1880; and son Julius M. Norris, a 16 year old farm laborer, born October 1889. All were born in Alabama. They lived on West Pollard Street in Fort Deposit.

He was listed in the 1902 city directory for Mobile, Alabama. It showed Julius Norris residing at 511 S. Scott Street.

Julius appeared on the Alabama Census of Confederate Soldiers enumerated 1907 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama. He was listed as Julius Caesar Norris, born 6 Aug 1832 at Richmond, Dallas county, Alabama. He enlisted as a private at Memphis, Tennessee in Capt. Harrison's company of Wert Adam's Cavalry. On 6 Jan 1865 he had been captured at Waterpool, Tensas Parish, Louisiana and sent to a military prison at Natchez, Mississippi. He escaped 10 Mar 1865 and returned home to Fort Deposit.1

Julius Caesar NORRIS appeared on a census, enumerated 22 April 1910, in the household of his son Charles M. NORRIS in Precinct 14, Lowndes County, Alabama. He was recorded as Charles' father, Richard J. Norris, age 82, born Alabama. With him was his wife, Georgia, age 68, born Alabama. they had been married 48 years and she was the mother of nine, six living.

He was mentioned in the obituary of Laura NORRIS on 14 July 1914 in the The Montgomery Times. He was listed as one of her three surviving brothers. He was mistakenly listed as D. Norris, of Mobile.

Julius Caesar NORRIS died on 2 February 1915 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama, at age 84.

His obituary appeared 3 February 1915 in the The Montgomery Advertiser, published in Montgomery, Alabama. "Julius C. Norris, a resident of Mobile the last ten years, died Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., at his home, 954 South Warren street, after a lingering illness. Deceased was a native of Dallas county, coming to Mobile from Fort Deposit, where he resided for a long time. He was a member of Fort Deposit lodge of Masons, and a Confederate veteran, having served in the Louisiana cavalry and was wounded four times.

Mr. Norris is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mesdames Charles and William Clauson, and James Y. Shaw, Jr; three sons. Charles of Hayneville, Ala., Edward L. of Georgiana and Julius M. of Mobile, besides many grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church Wednesday morning and the remains will be taken to Fort Deposit immediately afterwards for internment."

Susan L. Spiers died on 24 May 1894 in Fort Deposit, Lowndes County, Alabama, at age 57.

Her obituary appeared 31 May 1894 in the The Citizen-Examiner, published in Hayneville, Alabama. Fort Deposit -- "The other death of which I must speak is that of Mrs. T. S. Norris which occured last Thursday after a brief illness.

It was on the 8th of October 1836, in Pitts county, North Carolina that she was born and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Spiers and a niece of the late John A. Tyson. She married Mr. T. S. Norris May 9, 1860.

Her husband and five chidren; Mrs. Vincent Bell of Calhoun, Mrs. W. T. King of Sandy Ridge, Miss Laura and Mary Norris and Mr. Spiers Norris survive her.

At Mt. Willing in 1853 she joined the Baptist Church and was a member of that church for thirty years, till the family moved to Fort Deposit when she connected herself with the church here..."

Alice died not long after the marriage, as James married Miss Laura J. Bell (1859-1900) 30 May 1874 at Mount Willing, Lowndes county.1
