- [S697] His tombstone shows him being born in 1856, but the 1860 census lists him as 8 and the 1870 census lists him as 18, which would make him born in 1852. Also, given an 1856 DOB he would have granduated medical school in 1872 at age 16. In 1880 he gives his age as 26. The author believes that 1852 is a more likely DOB.

Dr. John Pope ABNEY
M, b. 1830, d. 17 February 1865
- Relationship
- 3rd cousin 3 times removed of John Kennedy BROWN Jr.
Dr. John Pope ABNEY, son of Joel ABNEY and Martha Coleman, was born in 1830 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carolina.
Dr. John Pope ABNEY appeared on a census, enumerated 10 December 1850, in the household of his mother Martha Coleman in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was enumerated at John T.(?) Abney, 20, farmer.
He graduated from the school of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1856. He appeared in the school catolog as John P. Abney, residence of Coleman Crossroads in South Carolina, for the term of 1855-1856.
John married Eustacia Caroline Floyd in 1859 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She was previously married to John Abney Coleman.
Dr. John Pope ABNEY and Eustacia Caroline Floyd appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 6 August 1860 in Saluda Regiment, Richardsonville, Edgefield County, South Carolina. The household was listed as John P. Abney, a 28-year-old physician, and Eustacia, his 25-year-old wife. He had real estate valued at $9000 and $10,000 in personal property. Also in the household was AJ Coleman [Amelia Isabell Coleman 1854-1935], 7, personal estate $7,000 and Claudia Abney, 1. Amelia Coleman was his step-daughter.
He began military service on 5 December 1861 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, when he enlisted as a a private in Co. D 19th South Carolina. Some say he was assistant surgeon in the 7th South Carolina. He was killed in action according to a statement by his widow, and based on his date of death it is likely that he died in or near Columbia, South Carolina as it fell to the federals on 17 Feb 1865.
Dr. John Pope ABNEY died on 17 February 1865 in South Carolina.
His estate was probated on 22 November 1865 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The following is from research by Bootsie Cousins: Dr. John Pope Abney (Edgefield, SC Box 90, #3611). Included in the package was the petition from Eustacia Abney applying for letters of administration. She says that "her husband John P. Abney departed this life on or about the 17th day of February 1865 being killed in battle" . . . He and Eustacia had three minor children: Claudia, Martha, and Johnny. He also had step-daughter Amelia Coleman, also a minor
In November 1865, Thomas O. Floyd writes a letter in behalf of Eustacia asking the Court what to do about the estate. He lists all the problems in trying to administer an estate in November 1865. The "letter" is very interesting but hard to read. John Pope Abney's estate included $18,000 or so in notes -- most of them doubtful. The plantation had a surplus of stock but that was not a plus at the time. He mentions again that the heirs are Mrs. Abney and four children -- three of them daughters. Johnnie/Johnny is a GIRL. [She is on the 1870 census for Eustacia and her 3rd husband Wesley Chappell in Newberry.] Thomas Floyd also says that John Pope Abney had been guardian for probably Amelia Coleman. He also says that Eustacia has bought a tract of land in Newberry County with her own money from the estate of Margaret Floyd and plans to move there. He keeps talking about the conditions of the times and makes suggestions.
The fact that Eustacia Abney was moving to Newberry explains why the guardian estates are in Newberry.
1869: Claudia Abney and Johnnie Abney, minors - Joel R. Abney, guardian; Box 117, #316
1870: Martha "Mattie" Abney, minor - Joel R. Abney, guardian; Box 114, #306
Joel R. Abney was John Pope Abney's brother and therefore their uncle and a logical choice for a guardian. Wesley Chappell already had a bunch of kids, so maybe he didn't need any more.
In John Pope Abney's estate papers' accounting for 1867, Eustacia is listed as Eustacia C. Grierson. By 1870, she is Eustacia Chappell. She married John Abney Coleman, who died in 1857. Amelia Coleman is Eustacia's and John A. Coleman's daughter. Eustacia married John Pope Abney shortly after Coleman died and had Claudia who was born about 1859. John Pope Abney died in 1865, and by 1867 she was married to ___ Grierson who must have also died, so that by 1870 she was Mrs. Chappell.1
