Earle Freeman

     Earle Freeman was born on 22 February 1878 in Fort Reno, Oklahoma.

Earle Freeman and Henrietta BURT appeared in a newspaper article 11 October 1915 in the The Sacramento Bee, published in Sacramento, California. An article concerning how state payroll benefits the city it details the pay of states employees in the city. The staff of the State Department of Engineering included Earle Freeman, secretary, $200 per month, and Henrietta Burt, stenographer and clerk, $125 per month. They worked together in a small office in the State capitol. According to the article average pay was $140 per month. Apparently the pay was low because in 1920 Earle resigned his position after 11 years, due to his displeasure at the low pay. He indicated that he was returning to San Diego.

With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. There were more than 24 boarders listed. She was recorded as Frances W. Copp, a 31-year-old widow, born in California. Her father was from England and his mother New York. Frances was employed as a saleswoman in a dry goods store. Her future husband, John Burt, was a manager in a department store in this census. Perhaps they worked together and in nearby stores.

Frances married second John Creth BURT, son of John James BURT and Sarah Bell WEBB, on 11 July 1938 in First Presbyterian Church, Carson City, Nevada. They were residents of Oakand. She was the widow of Harry G. Copp and the marriage license listed her as Frances M. Copp.

Frances Watts Livingston died on 31 July 1954 in Sacramento, California, at age 65. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California.

Frances Watts Livingston and John Creth BURT appeared in a newspaper article 1 August 1954 in the Oakland Tribune, published in Oakland, California. "Three persons identified tentatively as an elderly Oakland couple and a woman friend from Coloma, El Dorado county, were killed last night in a hit-run automobile accident on US Highway 50 about five miles out of Sacramento."

The coroner identified them as John C. Burt, 65, of 903 Vermont St., Oakland, and his wife, Frances W., about 60, and Mrs. Maude H. Rhorer, 62, of Coloma. "Oakland neighbors of the Burts said Mrs. Rhorer had been visiting in Oakland and that the Burts were driving her home oto Coloma."

Airman 3/c Robert D. Morrow, 23, was arrested at Mather Air Force Base. "Witnesses said he sideswiped Burt's car as they both traveled east of the highway. Burt lost control of his car, which turned over and crashed into a tree. Morrow did not stop.'

The Burts, who had no children, formerly operated a dress shop at 5717 Foothill Road.

Frances Watts Livingston and John Creth BURT appeared in a newspaper article 16 September 1954 in the The Sacramento Bee, published in Sacramento, California. The article said Airman Robert D. Morrow, 23, of Mather Air Force Base was convicted of drunk driving and hit and run causing the deaths of three persons. He was sentenced to prison for manslaughter, then the prison sentence was suspended and the judge ordered him confined in the county jail for one year. His drivers license was revoked for two years and would serve five years probation during which he would be expected to refrain from drinking.

Frances Watts Livingston and John Creth BURT appeared in a newspaper article 21 December 1954 in the Oakland Tribune, published in Oakland, California. The article said the estate of the Burts was reported to be valued at $406, 079.47. They had operated the Frances Dress Shop at 5717 Foothill Blvd. Heirs were to receive amounts from 2% to 10% of the estate and resided in Oakland, Watsonville, San Diego, Weed and Colorado towns, Mrs. Hazel K. Flath, niece of Mrs. Burt, was one of the principal heirs. Mr. and Mrs. Karl H. Olson, friends of the couple, were also legatees.

Claudius Whitfileld COLEMAN died on 21 May 1940 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, at age 74.1 He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.

His obituary appeared 6 June 1940 in the The Prattville Progress, published in Prattville, Alabama. Mr. Claude Whitfield Coleman, 74, died at his home in Birmingham on Tuesday, May 21st, and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery the following Thursday.

Mr. Coleman was born and reared in Prattville, spending the early part of his life on the Coleman Plantation. He moved from here to Birmingham in 1907 and entered the grocery business in that city for many years.

Surviving the deceased are two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Maddox and Mrs. Kate Coleman, both of Birmingham.

Sometime after 1900 Katie moved to Birmingham where she lived with her sister Hattie and husband. She appeared in their household in 1910-1940. No occupation was listed. She shaved years off her date of birth, usuallly listing 1880-1885 rather than 1871. But she was always listed as Hattie's sister so no doubt it was her.

Kate Lillian COLEMAN was mentioned in the obituary of Claudius Whitfileld COLEMAN on 6 June 1940 in the The Prattville Progress. His only survivors were two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Maddox and Mrs. Kate Coleman, both of Birmingham.
