Stephen Evan Burt, 1854-1919
Stephen Evan BURT, son of John William BURT and Sarah Ann Amanda CAFFEE, was born on 28 February 1854 in Weogufka, Coosa County, Alabama.1,2,3

Stephen Evan BURT appeared on a census, enumerated 10 July 1860, in the household of his parents John William BURT and Sarah Ann Amanda CAFFEE in Mt. Olive, Coosa County, Alabama. He was recorded as Stephen E. Burt, age 6, born Alabama.

He moved with his parents from Alabama to Arkansas 1866 From there they later moved to Texas, and Evan apparently moved back to Arkansas when he came of age.4

Stephen married first Minerva Ann Summers on 28 August 1872 in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. Minerva was a young widow. She had been married to a man named James William Carter. They had a daughter, Georgia Ann Carter, who was listed in the household with Minerva and her family in 1870. She was, however, listed only as G.A. and her last name was not listed as Carter. Evidently William Carter died prior to 1870 and Minerva took her daughter and moved in with her parents until her marriage to Evan. They had seven children together, all born in Boone County.5,6

Stephen and Minerva Ann BURT moved to Texas after they married. They lived in several areas of eastern and northern Texas between 1872 and 1886. The last place in Texas they lived was near Denton.

In about 1886, during the winter, the family migrated north into the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).4

Stephen Evan BURT and Minerva Ann Summers appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 7 June 1880 in Bosque County, Texas. The household was listed as S. E. Burt, a 25-year-old farmer; Minerva, his 29-year-old wife; step daughter Georgia A. Carter, 13, born Mississippi; daughter Beatrice Burt, 6; daughter Della Lee, 4; son John O. Burt, 2; and daughter Jennie, 6/12, born December in Texas. Beatrice, Della and John were all born in Arkansas.

Sue Burns in her blog "Keeper of the Dead" writes that when the families came north, they did so in the middle of the winter and rode right across the Red River as it was frozen over that year. Apparently it was a very harsh winter. They traveled with a herd of cattle when they moved north, and that they also had covered wagons for the journey. She said that the families settled first just north of what is now Velma, Oklahoma where they stayed in a “half-dugout” shelter. Later on, (by at the latest, 1888 or so) the family moved farther north, to an area near modern day Rush Springs, in Grady County.

Around 1890, Evan and Orran went to work for a Mr. Lynch B. Cochran who was married to an Indian lady and who owned land in I.T. just south of where Cox City, Oklahoma is today. On a hill on the west side of a creek that runs into Rush Creek, Evan and Orran built a store for Mr. Cochran. The settlement there was known for years as Burt, I.T. and there was a post office in the store from about 1890-1892. Mr. Cochran was the postmaster. Some printed sources confirm that the town of Burt was named after “the Burt boys, Evan and Iron” who were carpenters in the area. The hill where the store once stood is known to the old timers’ here as “Burt Mountain.”.4

Stephen married second Lorena Jennie Crawford on 7 February 1895 in Pearle, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.

Stephen Evan BURT died on 6 September 1919 in Rush Springs, Grady County, Oklahoma, at age 65.1,7 He was buried in Rush Springs Cemetery.

Shirley Sidney BURT, daughter of John James BURT and Sarah Bell WEBB, was born in November 1882 in San Jose, California.1 She was a school teacher.

Shirley moved with her parents from San Jose to San Francisco, California, 1895 where her father established his law practice.

Shirley Sidney BURT appeared on a census, enumerated 9 June 1900, in the household of her parents John James BURT and Sarah Bell WEBB in San Francisco, California. She was recorded as Shirley Burt, age 17.2

Shirley Sidney BURT was graduated in June 1901 at San Francisco State Normal School in San Francisco, California. Miss Shirley Burt of San Francisco appeared among the list of new graduates in the 15 Jun 1901 issue of The San Francisco Call and Post. Founded in 1857 as the San Francisco Weekly Normal School, in 1895 the teachering program split from the school and became the City Normal School and then on 22 Mar 1899 it became the San Francisco State Normal School with 31 women enrolled that first year, most likely including Shirley. It is now San Francisco State University.

Shirley Sidney BURT appeared in a newspaper article 18 January 1902 in the San Francisco Chronicle, published in San Francisco, California. Wins Her Fight Against Trustees - A San Francisco Teacher Retains Her Place in McKittrick - Bakersfiled, January 17 - The trouble between Miss Shirley Burt and the trustees of the McKittrick school district has been satisfactory adjusted. The trustees have resigned and new ones have been appointed by Superintendant Douh. It is alleged that Miss Burt, who resides in San Francisco, has been indiscreet and her actions cased a good deal of talk in the community. While in San Francisco during the holidays the trustees decided to discontinue her services as a teacher and so notified her. She returned from San Francisco and defied the trustees and crawled through the window of the schoolhouse and opened the doorsl which had been barred.

The small village was divided by the trouble, and warm arguments pro and con were held, in which clenched fists played a prominent part. The school teacher had a number of champions and things were interesting in McKittrick for a few days. Miss Burt is still teaching school and no further trouble is anticipated. While her actions have been indiscreet, there have been no serious charges preferred against her. In all small communities every act is open to criticism.

Miss Burt's father, attorney John J. Burt, residing at 727 Ashbury Street, was soon at this office, 530 California street, and flatly contradicted a portion of the Bakersfield story.

"The sympathies of partically the whole school district are with my daughter," he said. "Several citizens of McKittrick have called and assured me of this. It is a rough town in the oil district, and no place for an inexperienced girl of 18 years. Had I known the character of the place I would never have consented to have her go there to teach.

"The only cause of friction was a trivial matter-- a disagreement or 'spat' between my daughter and the daugter of trustee Peters at a whist party. Peters was the wealthiest and one of the most influential there, and through his influence the other two trustees arrayed themselves against Miss Burt. All the people there are her friends, however, and public sentiment practically forced the three trustees to back down and resign, whereupon the county superintendant appointed a new school board, and my daughter goes on with her school the same as usual.

"Yes, it is true that a gentleman by the name of Mailley knocked a man down for making a disparaging remark about her. However the incident has been unduly dwelt upon, and as I say, my daughter has been amply vindicated."3

Shirley Sidney BURT died on 28 June 1903 in San Francisco, California, at age 20. According to mortuary records she died at San Francisco County Hospital at age 20. Cause of death was Pelvs Abcess caused by Ovarian Cyst. No occupation was listed.4,5 She was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Colma, Sam Mateo County, California.4

Her obituary appeared 30 June 1903 in the Evening News published in Jan Jose, California. Death of a Native Daughter - A large number of San Jose people will learn with deep regret of the untimely death in San Francisco on the 28th instant of Miss Shirley Sidney Burt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Burt, formerly of this city. The young lady was a native of San Jose, and a graduate of the Lowell Grammar School here. In 1895 she removed with her father's family to San Francisco, where she made her home uniil her death.

The deceased was in her twentieth year at the time of her death.

Attorney and Mrs. J. J. Burt, the parents were old and highly esteemed residents of San Jose for many years. They were married in this city. Mrs. Burt having been Miss Sarah Webb, a well known and popular school teacher of this place. Several of their children were born in San Jose.

Mr. Burt removed with his family to the metropolis some eigth years ago, and established himself in practice there. Old school friendships and other kindly associations have kept the family, particularly the younger members of it, in close touch with a large circle of friends in San Jose, who feel keenly this great bereavement that has fallen upon it.

The funeral was held from the family home, 860 Shrader street, San Francisco, this morning, the internment at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, being private.
