Francis Marion Smith

M, b. 14 November 1825, d. 12 November 1907
     Francis Marion Smith was born on 14 November 1825 in Jackson County, Alabama.

Francis married first Avaline KILLINGSWORTH, daughter of John Sweet KILLINGSWORTH and Emmeline ABNEY, in 1851 in Longview, Gregg County, Texas.

Francis Marion Smith appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pine Tree, Upshur County, Texas, Marion Smith, a 35 year old farmer, born in Alabama, with real estate valued $400 and personal estate $600; his implied wife Evaline Smith, age 28, born in Alabama; implied children Eldridge Smith, age 8; Julia Smith, age 4; and Leonidas Smith, age 1, all born in Texas.

Francis began military service at age 36 on 1 February 1862 in Texas as a private in Company E, 27th Texas Cavalry, part of the 1st Texas Legion. He rose to the rank of captain of Company H.

Avaline died in 1865 in Gladewater, Gregg County, Texas, leaving Francis Marion Smith as a widower. After her death he married her younger sister, Mary.

Francis married second Emmeline Minerva KILLINGSWORTH, daughter of John Sweet KILLINGSWORTH and Emmeline ABNEY, on 15 June 1866 in Longview, Gregg County, Texas.

Francis Marion Smith and Emmeline Minerva KILLINGSWORTH appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1870 in Coffeeville, Upshur County, Texas. The household was listed as Francis Smith, a 44 year old farmer, born in Alabama; his wife Emiline Smith, age 22, keeping house, born in Alabama; Eldridge Smith, age 19, at home; Julia Smith, age 15; at home; Leon Smith, age 12; Lawrence Smith, age 2; and Berdy Smith, male, 6 months old, born in July. All of the children were born in Texas. Also in the houshold was David Ogleby, a 35 year old farmer, born in Mississippi, with personal estate valued $108.

Francis Marion Smith and Emmeline Minerva KILLINGSWORTH appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 16 June 1880 in Gregg County, Texas. The household was listed as Marion Smith, a 49 year old farmer, born in Alabama; wife Emeline Smith, age 32, keeping house, born in Alabama; son Lee Smth, age 22, works on farm; son Lawrence Smith, age 12, works on farm; son George Smith, age 7; daughter Pearl Smtih, age 5 and daughter Minnie Belle Smith, age 1. All of the children were born in Texas and all except Minnie Belle were attending school.

Francis Marion Smith died on 12 November 1907 in Gregg County, Texas, at age 81. He was buried in Fisher Cemetery, Gregg County, Texas.

Lemuel Parham Butt
