     Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH, son of Thomas SMITH and Mary Mitchell Scott, was born on 8 September 1814 in Clinton, Jones County, Georgia.

Samuel married Adelaide Julia Allen on 17 February 1840 in Autaugaville, Autauga County, Alabama.

Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH Samuel Parrish Smith, of Prattville, Alabama, was born near Clinton, Georgia, September 08, 1814. His father, moving to Alabama in 1818, was one of the early pioneers of that State. Dr. Smith's early education was obtained at the common schools in the neighborhood, and his medical studies were pursued under the supervision of Dr. J. W. Withers, of Washington, Alabama, at the Jefferson Medical College, Alabama, during the winter of 1835 and the summer of 1836, where he took partial courses in anatomy,
materia-medica, chemistry, and practice, also paying special attention to the lectures of Dr. W. P. C. Barton on medical botany. He attended the clinics of the Pennsylvania and Blockley Hospitals, and took a full course at the Jefferson College the ensuing winter. He returned to Alabama in the spring of 1837, and commenced practice with his former preceptor. In November he visited New Orleans, and entered the medical department of the University of Louisiana, from which institution he graduated the following spring. Returning to his former location he continued to practice there until 1845, when he settled in Prattsville in a general surgical and medical practice.

Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH died on 28 March 1891 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama, at age 76. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.

Dr. Eugene Allen SMITH

     Dr. Eugene Allen SMITH, son of Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH and Adelaide Julia Allen, was born on 27 October 1841 in Washington, Autauga County, Alabama.

After an education in Prattville and a three-year stint at Central High School in Philadelphia, Eugene matriculated to the University of Alabama as a junior in 1860, where he graduated with an A.B. in 1862. With the American Civil War underway, Eugene enlisted as a private with the 33rd Regiment Alabama Infantry of the Confederate States Army, and was elected to the rank of 2nd lieutenant by the men. In December 1862, Eugene was appointed Instructor of Military Tactics at the University of Alabama by Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate states. He remained in that post for the remainder of the war.

In 1865 he entered graduate school at the University of Berlin, followed by further studies at the University of Göttingen, and finally spent two years at the University of Heidelberg, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1868. Returning to the United States, Dr. Smith joined the University of Mississippi faculty as an instructor of chemistry. In addition to his teaching duties, he served as assistant state geologist for Mississippi from 1868–1871. In 1871 he was named professor of geology at the rebuilding University of Alabama. On July 10, 1872 he married Jane Henry Meredith Garland; the couple had a son, Merrill Smith.

Still on the staff of the University of Alabama, in 1873 Dr. Smith became Alabama state Geologist. He resumed a state geological survey that had been discontinued in 1857 with the death of Michael Tuomey, reporting on the mineral resources of Alabama. In 1878 he served as honorary commissioner for the state of Alabama to the Exposition Universelle in Paris, France. From 1884–1889 he served as a member of the American committee for the International Geological Congres. In 1904 he was a sectional vice president for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was vice president for the Geological Society of America in 1906 and served as president in 1913.

At the age of 86, he died at his home in Tuscaloosa eight days after surgery for a strangulated hernia. During his career, Dr. Smith had 116 publications in geological and scientific scholarly journals. Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus is named after him; this building is now the Alabama Museum of Natural History. In 1953, he was made a member of the Alabama Hall of Fame.1

Dr. Eugene Allen SMITH died on 7 September 1927 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at age 85. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Julia Adelaide SMITH died on 14 October 1932 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama, at age 89. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.

Merrill began military service on 1 March 1862 in Prattville, Alabama, He was elected 1st Lieutenant March 8, captured at Port Hudson July 9, 1863, sent to New Orleans on Steamer "Suffolk" July 14, confined at Custom House, sent to Rampart St., New York September 20, 1863 on Steamer Clinton, sent to Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, September 29, 1863, sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. for exchange, September 16, 1864, transferred to Military Prison, Camp Hamilton, Va. September 20, 1864, exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Va., admitted General Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Va., Chronic Diarrhoea September 21, furloughed September 25, granted leave November 28, 1864, his file contains a hard to read handwritten letter from his physician attesting to his weakened condition resulting from prison confinement, dated October 24, 1864 at Prattville.

Merrill married Julia Adelaide SMITH, daughter of Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH and Adelaide Julia Allen, on 2 November 1862 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama.

Merrill Edward Pratt died on 23 November 1889 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.

William married Ella Adelle SMITH, daughter of Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH and Adelaide Julia Allen, on 23 June 1872 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama.

     Col. Fielding Lewis was born on 7 July 1725 in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Fielding married Elizabeth WASHINGTON, daughter of Augustine WASHINGTON and Mary BALL, on 7 May 1750 in Virginia. They built a house in Fredericksburg, Kenmore House, in 1770, and owned The Lewis Store until 1776.

Col. Fielding Lewis died on 7 December 1781 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, at age 56.

Miss Burt's mother was before her marriage Miss Marjorie Boyd, of Cookesville, Tenn., daughter of the late Alvin W. Boyd and Mrs. Mary Goodpasture Boyd. On her paternal side she is the granddaughter of the late Williams Marshall Burt and Mrs. Anna Vann Burt, of Pittsview, Ala.

Miss Burt attended Huntingdon College amd receoved her B. S. degree from the University of Alabama, where she graduated with the class of 1940. While attending the university she was featured as one of the beauties in the "Corolla."

Mr. Lowery, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ensley Lowery, of Birmingham, was graduated from high school in Birmingham and obtained his degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in the class of 1938.

At present he is located in Charlotte, where the young couple will reside.

Virginia Boyd Burt died on 1 April 2007 in Pittsview, Russell County, Alabama, at age 87. She was buried in Pittsview Cemetery.

The engagement of Miss Aline Watters Burt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Marshall Burt, Jr., of Pittsview, to Lieutenant Forrest Harrison Norse, Jr., of Smethport, Penn., announced this morning is of wide social interest.

The marriage will take place August 15. Miss Burt's mother was formerly Miss Marjorie Boyd, daughter of Mrs. A. W. Boyd of Cookville, Tenn. On her paternal side she is the granddaughter of the late William Marshall Burt and Anna Vann Burt, pioneer citizens of Pittsview. She is a sister of Mrs. John E. Lowery, of Charlotte, N. C., and of Miss Marjorie Burt of Pittsview.

The bride-to-be attended Huntingdon College and received Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama where she graduated with the class of 1941.

At the University she was actively engaged in all campus activities and was a member of the social sorority Alpha Delta Pi. Since her graduation she has held a position at Post headquarters at Fort Benning, Ga.

Lieut. Norse is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Forest Harrison Norse, Sr. of Smethport, Penn.

He graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College with the class of 1941 with degree in civil engineering.

The past year he has been stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., with the 29th Infantry.

Aline Watters Burt died on 12 November 2005 in Phenix City, Russell County, Alabama, at age 85. She was buried in Pittsview Cemetery.

Lieutenant is the son of Mr.and Mrs. George W. Boon of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. His sister is Mrs. A. W. McClanahan of Valdosta, Georgia.

Lieutenant Boon attended the University of Texas and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was stationed in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands before being transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia with the 4th Infantry.

The wedding has been planned for October 1 at the Methodist Church in Pittsview.

Marjorie Marshall Burt died on 21 December 2016 in Pittsview, Russell County, Alabama, at age 94. She was buried in Pittsview Cemetery.
