He was seriously wounded 6 May 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness when an exploding artillery shell struck him in the chest and he spent months in the hospital. Complications from this wound eventually caused his early death.

The oldest forty years old and the youngest twenty-three. A bountiful dinner was spread and enjoyed by all and in the afternoon refreshments were served. A game of ball was enjoyed by the boys at five o'clock, after which all returned to the house and sang "God be with you until we meet again."

During the Civil War, John Marshall LANGSTON enlisted in Co. D 20th Alabama Infantry, CSA in 1861 in Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama. He died of measles at Camp Goode near Mobile, Alabama while the regiment was still training. His father went to him and bought his body back to Bibb county for burial.

Columbus began military service in 1861 He served as a private in Co. D 20th Alabama Infantry, CSA. He was killed during the Battle of Kolb's Farm near Marrietta, Georgia. His brothers Jasper and Newton found him wounded with a minnie ball in his stomach. They gave him water but were not allowed to stay with him. After the battle he had been moved and they could not find him.
