Reynolds/Runnels Gentry
M, b. 1757, d. 1826
Reynolds/Runnels Gentry, son of Hezekiah Gentry Sr. and Catherine Reynolds, was born in 1757.
Reynolds/Runnels married second Theodosia Poindexter circa 1780.
Reynolds/Runnels Gentry appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, Runnel's 1800 and 1810 censuses make it appear that Doshey may be a second wife. Neither has a woman close to his age in it. In his will, he also says that his wife Doshey is to have a child's part. Her first name might be Theodosia, but the Poindexter surname is questionable.
1790 shows him with 1M 16+; 1M <16; six females (wife & 5 daughters?
1800: 2 M<10; 1 M 16-25; 1 M 45+; 1 F <10; 2 F 10-5;1 F 16-25 Nobody close to his age
1810: 1 M 10-15; 1 M 45+; 1 F < 10; 1 F 10-15; 1 F 16-25 Nobody close to his age
1820: 1 M 16-25; 1 M 45+; 1 M < 10; 1 F 16-25; 1 F 45+ Female close to his age. Probably his second wife Dosia.1
Reynolds/Runnels Gentry was named executor and an heir in the will of Hezekiah Gentry Sr. dated 19 January 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Hezikiah wrote "my son Runnels Gentry" and says that Runnels is to pay the children of Laureny Burnett $400.2
Reynolds/Runnels Gentry sold a tract of land to Zachariah S. Brooks on 15 May 1823 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Mortgage from Reynols Gentry to Zachariah S. Brooks: May 15, 1823. Reynols (how it is spelled) Gentry had taken out three notes with Zachariah Smith Brooks during 1822 and 1823. He mortgaged a 150-acre+/- to Brooks. The property was adjacent to Hezekiah Gentry, Sr., William Abney, and Richard Coleman among others. Witnesses were James Abney and Charles O'Neal. The signature says Reynols X Gentry. [This is obviously Hezekiah, Sr.'s son Reynols (Runnels).]3
Reynolds/Runnels Gentry died in 1826 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
Reynolds/Runnels left a will dated 12 January 1826 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The copy of the will of Ruynol Gentry's will, dated January 12, 1826, has the name of the slave Ellis clearly written out.. It says that "Hugh Duffy shall take my son Hezekiah and take good care of him during his life as also to assist my daughter Gilly in raising her youngest child until such child can work for its support." [Note: It does not say Gilly Gentry. It just says Gilly.] . . . He appoints Hugh Duffy and James Abney as executors. He then mentions that his nephew William Gentry has been working his farm . . . [This is probably his brother Thomas's son William.] His widow was Doshey, but I think we agree that she is a second wife as she only gets a child's part of his estate.
Witnesses: J. B. Mitchell, Richard Coleman , and HIZAKIAH GENTRY.
Leonide Cousins, in her research wrote. "That is two different Hezekiahs. I don't think Runnels would have had his son who needed taking care of as a witness to his will. He has specified that Hugh Duffy is to take care of him "during his life." That indicates to me that something either mentally or physically was wrong with Runnel's son Hezekiah. I think his brother Hezekiah is already dead. Runnels' brother Thomas had a son Hezekiah too."4 His estate was probated on 10 February 1826 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Estate sale for Runnels Gentry, Hugh Duffy, Executor. Buyers: Reason Gentry, Gilly Gentry, Joesph Trotter, Richard Coleman, John Clark, Sr., Charles Abney, Hezekiah Gentry, William Gentry, Hugh Duffy, Sampson Duffy, Leroy Brown, Joseph Rutherford, Edward Clark, Richard Coleman, J. B. Mitchell, Samuel Christian, and others.
September 14, 1826, Runnels Gentry's estate paid Sampson Duffy for making TWO coffins. One is obviously for Runnels, but he himself did not need two. (Image 656 of 726)
Note: Hugh Duffy was married to Nancy Gentry, I think. Runnels indicated that there were other children besides Hezekiah. Conspicuously absent from any of the sales is Robert Gentry.1
