Robert Rutherford ABNEY

Robert Rutherford ABNEY was born on 28 August 1810 in Maury County, Tennessee, son of Paul Collins ABNEY and Dorothy "Dolly" RUTHERFORD. His middle name is sometimes mispelled Releford.1,2,3 He was a farmer.
Robert moved to Warren County, Mississippi in 1819 with his parents. About 1828 he settled in Hinds County, Mississippi in an area called Champion Hill where he married. The farm was heavily damaged during the Battle of Champion Hill fought May 1863 as part of the Vicksburg campaign.
Robert married Mary Ann ROBERTS on 14 July 1830 in Hinds County, Mississippi. The marriage produced ten children.1,4

Jesse Mercier ABNEY, son of Robert Rutherford ABNEY and Mary Ann ROBERTS, was born on 7 November 1834 in Hinds County, Mississippi.1 He moved with his parents from Champion Hill, Hinds County, Mississippi to Jasper County, Mississippi, in1836.1 He was educated in the common schools in Jasper County, Texas. He later taught school in the county.

Abney MAYS, son of Mattox MAYS and Dorcas ABNEY, was born in 1758 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
Abney and his brother Samuel MAYS fought in the Revolutonary War as privates in the 2nd Spartan Regiment, formerly known as the Upper Saluda District Militia. They were at Hanging Rock, Musgrove Mill, and Black Stocks under Gen. Thomas Sumter, the "Gamecock." After the British Garrison was defeated at Ninety-Six Samuel Mays was one of twenty men thanked by Congress for bravery and was offered a commission as was his brother, Abney.1
A land deed shows that Abney gained possession of three hundred and fourteen acres of land located in the district of Ninety-six on the Pen branch of the Saluda River on December 8, 1785. There is a second land deed dated August 6, 1785 that conveys a further three hundred and seventy acres of land of him in the same area. His own lands and the lands of William Hill bordered this land. On August 25, 1787 Abner (I) Mays of Edgefield County, SC sold to David Liles, a planter, for the sum of 50 pounds, ninety acres of land. This land was part of Six hundred seventy-three acres, which had been granted to him June 5, 1786 on Halfway Swamp, waters of the Saluda River bounded by lands of William Hill, NW, Philemon Bozeman, SE, Reuben Holloway, SW, vacant on the south.2
Abney MAYS died on 4 February 1804 in Cambridge, Greenwood County, South Carolina.3

Lists his heirs as his children: William, Gardiner, John, Abney Jr., Matthew, Meady, James, Henry, Elizabeth (Whitley), Sally (Hill), Tabitha (Carter), Nancy (Broadway).
