James began military service at age 22 in May 1861 in Arkansas as a private, Company G, 6th Arkansas Infantry, CSA, Capt. Kilgore & Col. Lyons per his pension application. He fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Franklin. He was wounded at Chickamauga.¹

James married Elizabeth Key Brooks on 11 July 1865. She first married John Clark Towles 1855 and had one son B.O. Towles. John's civil War death was 1863.¹
