William W. Watts
M, b. circa 1824
William W. Watts, son of Edward Watts, was born circa 1824 in Alabama.
William married Susan Mary Ann Chasteen circa 1847 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.
William W. Watts and Susan Mary Ann Chasteen appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1850 in Pickens County, Alabama. The household was listed as William Watts 26 AL, Mary A. Watts 20 and Almido [America?] 2 female.
William W. Watts and Susan Mary Ann Chasteen appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1860 in Crossland, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The household was listed as William Watts 37, Mary A. Watts 30, Ana A. Watts 8, Thomas M. Watts 6, John W. Watts 4, and Martha B. Watts 2.
William saw military service between 1861 and 1865 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, serving as a private in a home guard/Alabama Reserves unit of cavalry commanded by Lt. James Carson. Also, W. W. Watts enlisted 1 Apr 1862 at Northport in Co. D 43rd Alabama Infantry. Regimental returns for December 1862 listed him as left sick in Kentucky 12 Dec 1862.
From Randall Watts, "according to his grandaughter in the 1990s when I was researching him, the Confederate Calvary got him out of his field why he was plowing." That would seem to support him being in the home guard. Not sure if that was before or after he left the 43rd Alabama.1 According to Randall Watts: "I had heard he survived the war , almost died , made it to ferry near Peterson, was nursed back to health by ferry operators daughter and married her, after he found out his wife had remarried when it's was months after war and he hadn't come home, this was from a man I met in Pickens county that was related to him. I think WW Watts grave is in cemetery just outside Carrollton, been 25 years since I was in Cemetery so I don't remember dates on marker."
